John Shearer (born June 14, 1981), is an American music, entertainment, and portrait photographer. He is based in Nashville, TN.
Career
[edit]John Shearer is a photographer based in Nashville, Tennessee, known for his work in entertainment portraiture[1], key art for film and television, advertising, album covers, and backstage documentary coverage[2][3]. Originally from California[4], Shearer developed an interest in photography during his college years at San Francisco State University, influenced by his mentor, rock photographer Jim Marshall.
Over the course of his career, Shearer has worked with a variety of clients, including artists, record labels, brands, TV networks, movie studios, and publications. Shearer’s approach to photography centers around relationships and he’s earned long-standing relationships with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Bob Dylan[5], Katy Perry, Taylor Swift[6], Luke Bryan, Thomas Rhett and many others.[1][7] As a result, he's captured iconic images of several notable artists.
Since he and his family moved to Nashville in 2015, Shearer has found himself to be one of the most in-demand photographers in the genre[8]. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Recording Academy, the Country Music Association, and the Academy of Country Music. He also serves as Nashville Bureau Chief for Getty Images[7].
Notable Photographs
[edit]In 2003, at the MTV Video Music Awards show, John Shearer captured a widely circulated photo of Britney Spears and Madonna kissing[9] during their musical performance. This photo attracted significant attention, circulating on the covers of many magazines, newspapers and online media sources, and elevated John's photography[8]. This moment was named the most outrageous MTV VMAs Moment in 2020[10] by Rolling Stone.
In 2015, Bob Dylan's Shadows in the Night album was released featuring a cover photo taken by Shearer[11][5]. Shearer was "more or less Dylan’s official photographer between 2012 and 2017".[11]
In 2023, Shearer's photo of Taylor Swift was chosen as the theatrical release poster art for Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.
Personal Life
[edit]John is married to Clea Shearer, co-founder of The Home Edit[12], and co-host of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition[13]. They have two children.
