KiBa (from the German words for cherry (Kirsche) and banana (Banane)) is a non-alcoholic beverage consisting of cherry and banana nectar or juice. [1] It is well known in Germany and especially popular amongst youth.

KiBa

Preparation and serving

[edit]

KiBa can be bought pre-mixed or mixed from banana and cherry and is available in many restaurants. It most commonly consists of nectar, with a lower fruit content than juice.[2] Classic KiBa consists of equal Parts or a 2:1 ratio of banana and cherry nectar with variations in proportion according to personal preference. The mixing of the light banana and darker cherry nectar creates a marbled look of different layers with different ratios of banana and cherry. KiBa is usually made from chilled nectars and served cold. It is rarely served with ice cubes.

History

[edit]

KiBa reached wide popularity in the 1990s[3][4] and was subsequently passed down in families.

Variations

[edit]

Variations are less common and include Jogurt-Kiba[5], KiBa milkshakes and non-beverages such as KiBa-inspired bananabread with cherries. [6] [7]

Other uses

[edit]

KiBa has, due to the different density of the nectars, been used to demonstrate diffusion and as a model for the different layers of ocean water in German schools and children books. [8] [9]
