Initially operated as a family business, the company became known for its attention to detail and use of premium materials.[1][2][3][4]
History
[edit]Marge Carson was founded in 1947 by Marjorie Reese Carson, a designer focused on high-end, customizable furniture that combined European design elements with American craftsmanship. Based in California, the company gained recognition in the post-World War II era, as American homeowners sought more personalized and luxurious furnishings. The company began as a family-run business and built its reputation on attention to detail and the use of premium materials.[5]
From its inception, Marge Carson offered bespoke furniture with intricate detailing and high-quality craftsmanship. The company’s design philosophy blended European influences with California's relaxed lifestyle, appealing to a clientele of homeowners and interior designers seeking upscale, custom design solutions.
Acquisition by Masco Corporation (1980s–1995) In the late 1980s, Marge Carson was acquired by Masco Corporation, a company specializing in home improvement and building products. This acquisition provided financial support for Marge Carson, enabling it to expand its operations and access new markets.[6] Despite the differing business strategies between Masco and Marge Carson, the company continued its emphasis on producing high-quality, customizable furniture.
Jim LaBarge Ownership (1995–2022) In 1995, CEO Jim LaBarge led a management buyout of Marge Carson from Masco Corporation. Under LaBarge’s leadership, the company maintained its focus on craftsmanship and custom design, manufacturing furniture in the United States, Mexico, and Indonesia. During this period, Marge Carson expanded its showroom presence domestically and internationally.[1][7][8]
In 2022, Jim LaBarge ceased the company’s operations after more than two decades of ownership. The sudden closure created uncertainty about the company’s future until it was later acquired.[9]
Janet Linly Ownership (2022–Present) Following the closure in 2022, Janet Linly, founder and CEO of Linly Designs, an interior design firm based in Chicago, acquired the Marge Carson brand. This acquisition included the company’s manufacturing facility, allowing Linly to continue the brand’s tradition of artisan craftsmanship. Under her management, Marge Carson has been restructured as an exclusive luxury brand, with distribution limited to select showrooms and designers worldwide. Linly’s leadership has aimed to preserve the company’s legacy while adapting it to contemporary market preferences and expectations.[10][11][12] [13] [14]
