Mateusz Sitek (19 October 2003[1] – 6 June 2024[2][3]) was a Polish soldier who died as a result of a migrant attack during the migration crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border.
Biography
[edit]He came from the village of Plewica[2], the son of Emilia[4] and Grzegorz[5][6]. In the years 2019–2022 he attended the military class of the 3rd Secondary School. Nicolaus Copernicus Wyszków[7]. As a student, he represented the school many times and participated in patriotic and charitable events[7]. Initially, he served in the ranks of the Territorial Defense Force[8]. He served in the 1st Warsaw Armored Brigade from December 18, 2023[9]. Immediately after completing the training, he was assigned to operations at the Polish-Belarusian border in connection with the migration crisis that has been ongoing there since 2021.
He was a footballer for the WKS Rząśnik[3] team, he played as a striker, and less often as a midfielder[2].
Death circumstances
[edit]On the morning of May 28, 2024, near the border with Belarus, near the village of Dubicze Cerkiewne, he was attacked with a knife by one of the migrants who tried to cross the border barrier[10]. The perpetrator pushed the gun through the gap between the dam spans and stabbed Sitek in the chest area[2][3][11]. After providing first aid, he was transported to the hospital in Hajnówka[12][13][14], where he underwent surgery[14], then he was transported to the Military Medical Institute in Warsaw, where he died[11][15].
Commemoration
[edit]He was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant and awarded the Cross of Merit for Bravery by President Andrzej Duda[16] and the Gold Medal of Merit for National Defense[3][11] by the Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz[11]. His funeral took place on June 12, 2024 in Nowy Lubiel[17][18], and in honor of the fallen soldier that day, at noon, the sirens of uniformed services vehicles rang out across Poland[17][18].
On July 31, 2024, during the ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising, one of the M1A1 Abrams tanks, belonging to the Polish Armed Forces, was named "Sitek-21" in honor of the soldier. The name of the tank was painted on its barrel, and the ceremonial unveiling was performed by Mateusz's mother, Emilia Sitek[6][4].
