Matthew C. Leclerc (originally born Mateo Carlos Maricón; April 20, 1998) is a Cuban-Canadian researcher at the University of Ottawa[1]. Noted for his research on the reactivity of N -Heterocyclic Carbenes and Fluoroalkenes[2], Leclerc has been a noted member of the Ottawa academic community. He is also known for being a close supporter with the local Cuban minority in the city.

Early Life

[edit]

Born in Holguin, Cuba, Leclerc is the youngest of 12 children born in the eponymous city. Early in life he escaped with his family to Tampa, Florida by means of a crude dinghy made of dejected beer kegs. Being granted asylum by the Canadian Government in 2003, he and his family proceeded to move to Ficko, Ontario. He studied at St. Joseph's High School, excelling in the maths and sciences, but notably failing Locally Developed Lunch.

Academic Career

[edit]

After graduating high school at St. Joseph's, Leclerc enrolled for a Bachelor's in Chemistry with a minor in African Studies. Finding a passion in haloalkanes and haloalkenes, Leclerc took up a research position at the Fullerton Laboratory. Leclerc would go on to publish numerous articles on the subject[1]

Personal Life

[edit]

Prior to his career in research, Leclerc participated in many Cuban-inspired street performances in order to give remittances to his impoverished family. Due to significant discrimination, he had to anglicize his name.

In 2022, he married Mariam "Mimi" Leblanc.

He is personal friends with the renowned physics researcher Andrzej Czajkowski.
