His family were part of the large entrepreneurial Indian community of East Africa and moved to the UK following increasing anti-Indian sentiment. Faced with racism and discrimination in the 1970s, his parents were strong supporters of the Labour Party, which he says influenced his understanding of the party's commitment to a better society.[1].

Patel's professional career spans over 18 years in the health and social care sector.[2] He began his career in the NHS, working at his local hospital soon after leaving school. He currently works for a national health and social care regulator. Patel has highlighted his commitment to protecting and improving the NHS and social care services.[2]
