This our paradise [1]is a novel written by Karan Mujoo. It follows the lives of two Kashmiri families - one Hindu and one Muslim - as they navigate the political and social unrest in the 1990s. The two main protagonists are an unnamed eight-year-old boy and a young man named Shahid. Through their eyes we see the rising insurgency in Kashmir and its bloody aftermath. The book was published by Penguin Random House in May 2024.

Author[edit]

Karan Mujoo was born in Kashmir in 1986. After the family's displacement in 1990, he moved to Chandigarh. Over the course of his career he has written for various publications such as Outlook[2], FountainInk[3], FirstPost[4], Fiftytwo.in[5], The Tribune[6], Scroll[7] and others. This Our Paradise is his first novel.

Reception[edit]

Manisha Gangahar of The Tribune while reviewing the book wrote, 'The intricate details of daily life, italicised words that had weaved the ethnic fabric of Kashmiriyat, the ambivalence regarding ideological stances and the subtle hints of the animosity that is believed to have always existed between the two communities, all add up to deepen the narrative of conflict. However, one of the novel’s strengths lies in its ability to humanise the Kashmir conflict, providing readers with an intimate glimpse into the scars of the turmoil.'[8]
