Umana Okon Umana was born in Nigeria on 20th August 1959. He is a former Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with the portfolio of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs.[1][2] Before the ministerial appointment, Umana was the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Oil & Gas Free Zones Authority (OGFZA) of Nigeria.[3][4]

ACADEMIC RECORD

An old boy of St. Patrick’s College[5] in Calabar, Cross River State in Nigeria’s South-South region, Umana holds a B.Sc. in Economics[6] from the University of Calabar and an MBA in Finance from the University of Port Harcourt.

In 2019, Umana received the Executive Certificate in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School, having completed courses in "Leading Economic Growth," "Mastering Negotiations" and "Driving Government Performance" in an elite leadership program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University in 2018 and 2019.[7]

POLITICAL ACTIVITIES

  • He contested for the office of Governor of Akwa Ibom State on the platform APC in 2015[8].[9]
  • In 2019, he was made the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Planning Committee for the APC Presidential Campaign Rally.
  • At the national level, Umana was appointed Deputy Director of Logistics for the APC Presidential Campaign in 2019.[10]

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

In 2003, Umana Okon Umana was appointed Commissioner for Finance[11] by former governor Obong Victor Attah and served for two terms.

Under Chief Godswill Akpabio as governor, Umana was appointed Secretary to Akwa Ibom State Government in 2007. He served in that position till 2013.[12]

He received a national call in September 2016 when he was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority (OGFZA).[3]

Under his leadership, OGFZA witnessed a series of great wins and awards which include:

  • In 2018 and 2019, OGFZA won the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) Award[13] as the best Federal Agency (among 44 Federal Government Agencies in Nigeria) in the implementation of the Executive Order 001 on Transparency and Efficiency in the business environment[14]
  • In 2019, OGFZA received the Award of Excellence in Productivity and innovation in e-government by the National Productivity Centre.[15]
  • OGFZA also won the following awards of the 'fDi Magazine[16]' (a publication of Financial Times of London): FREE ZONE OF THE YEAR 2018 and BESPOKE FREE ZONE INCENTIVES 2019.
