Possible hoax

[edit]

A Commons deletion request was raised on the images used in the draft version of this article (Commons:Deletion requests/Files found with "Mathew Miller"), as they were taken from a findagrave user who did not seem reliable, with one image being a provably misidentified drawing of an unrelated person, J Pinkney Henderson.

The uploader hasn't responded to the deletion discussion, but has uploaded what appears to be photoshop-filtered version of one of those flagged images (an AI-upscaled version of a findagrave image), describing it on Commons as being from an "1865 newspaper", and here on enwiki as being an "incomplete sketch" of Miller.

Most sources cited here aren't checkable online. Among those that are, https://academic.oup.com/dh/issue/48/3 is used as a source for Miller visiting England but does not appear to mention him. Belbury (talk) 09:03, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly a hoax. He "booked voyages to China and Thailand"? I mean, that's blatant enough for a G3 speedy deletion. Add to this the fact that he is not mentioned in Fortier (1904) nor in Johnson (1999) – I did not waste more time on checking other sources. --bonadea contributions talk 12:13, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
