Mathieu Mercier is a French visual artist, born in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine in 1970. He lives and works in Paris.[1][2]

Biography

Mathieu Mercier was born in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine in 1970. He studied at the École nationale supérieure d'art de Bourges from 1989 to 1994, at the Institut des hautes études en arts plastiques in Paris in 1995, and at the Beaux-Arts in Nantes in 1997.[3][4]

After winning the Marcel Duchamp Prize in 2003, followed by an exhibition at the Centre Pompidou titled Le Pavillon, Mercier's body of work was presented at the Musée d'art moderne de la Ville de Paris/ARC in 2007, and later at the Kunsthalle Nürnberg in 2008.[5]

In the tradition of Duchamp and Mondrian, Mathieu Mercier is focused on uncovering and revealing the beauty in everyday objects. His diverse talents as a painter, sculptor, architect, and filmmaker have led him to work with mass-produced objects that are familiar to all of us, but which he presents in an aesthetic and artistic way.[6]

Mathieu Mercier's work is heterogeneous and plays with the criteria used by critical analysis to describe it. Concepts such as abstraction, objectivity, simulacrum, appropriation, ready-mades, and functionalism are applied, but their enumeration borders on the absurd. His work includes references to human, natural, and social sciences, offering a fresh perspective on objects.[7]

Since the beginning of his career, Mathieu Mercier has reflected on the definition of the role of objects, both within the consumer industry and in the art world. His research constantly questions the symbolic and utilitarian functions of objects.[8]

He is represented by galleries Mehdi Chouakri (Berlin), Massimo Minini (Brescia), lange + pult (Zurich), Ignacio Liprandi (Buenos Aires), and TORRI (Paris).[9]
