Mera Balam Thanedaar is an Indian Hindi-language television series produced by Shashi Sumeet Productions. It is an official remake of Colors Marathi series Raja Ranichi Ga Jodi[1] and stars Shagun Pandey and Shruti Choudhary.[2] It premiered on 3 January 2024 on Colors TV.

Summary

[edit]

The story revolves around two individuals with contrasting morals: Bulbul Rajawat, a spirited teenager who believes that lying for a greater good is an act of kindness, and IPS Veerpratap "Veer" Singh, a police officer who despises lies and is dedicated to combating the treacherous underage marriage practice in his community. Veer and Bulbul are forced to marry each other under certain circumstances. Bulbul learns a horrifying truth that she is underage after their marriage. Now she needs to hide the truth and protect Veer and their families, and fulfill her responsibilities as a wife and daughter-in-law.

Plot

[edit]

Bulbul hails from a complicated family of five. Her father, Devendra Rajawat, is a man consumed by his pride and the need to maintain his family’s prestige, despite their dire financial situation. Devendra, a descendant of a once-noble lineage, has resorted to gambling to alleviate their financial strain, only to become indebted to his friend, Mangal Chauhan. Meanwhile, Bulbul’s mother, Geeta, is a housewife struggling to manage the household amidst their financial problems. To make ends meet, she secretly sells homemade pickles with Bulbul’s help.

Bulbul has an older sister, Drishti, who has been engaged to Veer since childhood, as a result of an agreement made after the Rajawat family helped Veer’s mother in the past. Although the engagement was arranged, Drishti and Veer are genuinely in love. Drishti is preparing for her upcoming wedding while secretly applying for a study program in London, which she has concealed from her family. Bulbul’s elder brother, Amber, is pursuing his studies at a university in another city.

Veer’s family has its own share of complexities. He lives with his father, Vardhan Singh, while his mother remains in a coma. His elder brother, Vishesh, a respected news anchor, shares Veer’s deep-rooted commitment to honesty, both harboring a disdain for even the smallest lies. Vishesh is a widower with a daughter, Varnika. Veer’s elder sister, Vani, suffered a mental breakdown following a troubled marriage and pregnancy. She has a son, Vyom, who was raised under the belief that Veer is his biological father, though he occasionally questions his parentage.

The Singh family’s longstanding feud with the Chundawat family adds to the tensions. The Chundawat matriarch, Bhavani, a powerful local politician, has cursed the Singh family, declaring that no daughter-in-law would ever enter their home. Bhavani’s son, Inspector Rana, is Veer’s rival, working on the same cause of combating underage marriages but with contrasting values.

Veer and Bulbul first cross paths while Veer is chasing Ratan Chauhan, a human trafficker involved in child marriages. Bulbul, pretending to be a police officer to intimidate a shopkeeper who had underpaid for her mother’s pickles, accidentally crosses Veer’s path. Veer mistakes Bulbul for an officer and asks her to help capture Ratan. When she fails, Veer realizes her deception, though she escapes before he can confront her.

Their paths cross again during Drishti’s engagement, when Veer mistakenly proposes to Bulbul, thinking she is Drishti. After clearing up their identities, the two are frequently thrown together by fate, though Veer distrusts Bulbul for the lies she told to protect her family. Unbeknownst to Veer, Bulbul has been secretly aiding him in his work to stop underage marriages.

The situation escalates when Devendra, under pressure from Mangal, agrees to marry Bulbul off to Ratan in exchange for clearing his debts. Mangal promises Devendra that if Bulbul marries his son, Ratan, he will forgive the debt. What Devendra doesn't know—or doesn’t care to know—is that Bulbul is a minor, a fact hidden by a falsified birth certificate. Despite her resistance, Bulbul is engaged to Ratan in a mass marriage orchestrated by Bhavani to garner political favor.

As the wedding day approaches, Veer uncovers Bulbul’s plight and tries to intervene. Bulbul, emotionally manipulated by her father, is torn, while Bhavani uses her influence and Inspector Rana to thwart Veer’s efforts. In a dramatic turn of events, Bulbul finds the courage to stand up against the forced marriage, encouraging the other brides to do the same. Together, they reveal their true ages, and with Veer’s help, the mass wedding is halted. Bhavani shifts the blame to Ratan, who is arrested, while Rana faces suspension.

As Veer and Drishti’s wedding preparations continue, Rana and Bhavani plot their revenge. They arrange for a fake entrance exam in London to lure Drishti away from her wedding, leading to her kidnapping. Bulbul, in search of Drishti, is also abducted by Ratan, who has escaped police custody and attempts to forcibly marry her. Veer saves Bulbul, but in the aftermath, society begins to blame her for breaking up the weddings. To protect her honor and his family’s reputation, Veer decides to marry Bulbul, unaware that she is still a minor. Despite Geeta’s attempt to reveal the truth, Devendra stops her, and Bulbul reluctantly enters her new home, where she faces rejection from Veer’s family.

Bulbul’s life grows more complicated when Veer’s comatose mother, Sulakshana, awakens and refuses to accept Bulbul as her daughter-in-law. Bulbul endures numerous trials, including sabotage from Drishti and Kaveri, but her honesty and kindness gradually win over the family—except Varnika, who views Bulbul as a threat to her mother’s place in the household.

The tension builds as Bulbul learns from Geeta that she is a minor and could jeopardize not only her family but Veer’s career as a police officer. Fearing the consequences, Bulbul decides to leave Veer. However, her plan backfires, bringing her closer to him instead. Sulakshana, meanwhile, continues to test Bulbul, while Drishti and Kaveri scheme to make her fail.

In college, Bulbul faces new challenges, clashing with Varnika’s friend, Avinash, who plots to tarnish her reputation. Varnika becomes entangled in Avinash’s schemes, leading to blackmail and threats. Bulbul must now navigate the dangerous waters of Avinash’s manipulation while protecting Varnika and bringing justice to the other girls Avinash has harmed. How Bulbul handles these challenges—and whether she can bring Avinash to justice—remains to be seen.

After a lot of twist and turns Veer learns about Bulbul's age being below 18. Meanwhile, Drishti returns and marries Vishesh. Legal action is taken against Veer for marrying an underage and Veer's family throws Bulbul out of their house.
