Mountain Province State University (MPSU) is the only public university in Mountain Province, Philippines. It is mandated to provide higher professional, technical and special instructions for special purposes and promote research and extension services, advanced studies and progressive leadership in agriculture, education, forestry, engineering, arts, sciences, humanities, and other fields.[1] Its main campus is in Bontoc, Mountain Province.

History

Having been established as the Mountain Province Community College, it was converted into the Mountain Province State Polytechnic College by President Corazon Aquino on January 17, 1992, following the passage of Republic Act No. 7182.[2]

On August 1, 2024, President Bongbong Marcos signed into law Republic Act No. 12016, converting the college into the Mountain Province State University.[3]

Campuses

Mountain Province State University operates a multi-campus system strategically located across Mountain Province to serve its diverse student population. The main campus is situated in Bontoc, the provincial capital, which houses the university's administrative offices and offers the majority of undergraduate and graduate programs. This campus serves as the primary hub for academic activities and student services.

The Tadian campus, known for its strong focus on engineering and agricultural programs, is located in the municipality of Tadian. This campus has developed a reputation for excellence in technical education, particularly in Civil, Electrical, and Geodetic Engineering programs. It also offers various courses in agriculture and forestry, leveraging the region's agricultural heritage.

In Paracelis, MPSU maintains a campus that specializes in agricultural technology and related fields. This campus plays a crucial role in supporting the agricultural development of the eastern part of Mountain Province through its academic programs and community extension services.

The Bauko campus, the newest addition to the university system, extends MPSU's educational reach to the southern part of the province. This strategic location helps make higher education more accessible to students from surrounding communities.

Graduate Studies

The Doctor of Education program prepares educational leaders and researchers, while various Master's programs encompass specialized fields including Education, Science Education, Public Administration, and Business Administration. The institution also offers unique graduate programs tailored to regional needs, such as the Master in Rural Development & Indigenous Peoples Education. Additionally, the Master of Science in Criminal Justice with a major in Criminology serves professionals in law enforcement and criminal justice sectors.

Bontoc Campus Programs

The main campus in Bontoc hosts the university's most diverse array of undergraduate programs. In the field of education, the campus offers specialized teaching degrees including Early Childhood Education, Special Needs Education, Elementary Education, and Secondary Education, addressing the growing demand for qualified educators in the region. The business and management cluster features programs in Accountancy, Business Administration, Office Administration, and Tourism Management, preparing students for careers in the commercial sector.

The campus has also established itself as a center for technology and social sciences education, offering degrees in Information Technology and Political Science. Its health sciences program, particularly the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, contributes to addressing healthcare needs in the province. The hospitality education sector is served through comprehensive programs in Hotel and Restaurant Management, available at both bachelor's degree and associate levels.

Paracelis Campus Programs

The Paracelis campus specializes in agricultural education, focusing on practical and theoretical aspects of agricultural science. The campus offers the Bachelor of Agricultural Technology program and a Diploma in Agricultural Technology, both designed to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability in the region. These programs combine traditional farming knowledge with modern agricultural techniques, particularly suited to the geographical and cultural context of Mountain Province.

Tadian Campus Programs

Tadian campus serves as the university's hub for engineering and environmental sciences. The engineering department offers a comprehensive suite of programs including Civil, Electrical, and Geodetic Engineering, preparing students for technical careers crucial to regional development. The campus's strong focus on environmental and agricultural studies is evident in its Bachelor of Science programs in Agroforestry, Forestry, Environmental Science, and Agribusiness.

The campus also maintains a robust education program, offering degrees in Elementary Education, Secondary Education, and Technical Teacher Education. Entrepreneurship education is emphasized through a dedicated Bachelor of Science program, promoting business development in the region. The agricultural focus is further strengthened through the Bachelor of Agricultural Technology program and a Diploma in Agricultural Technology, similar to those offered at the Paracelis campus but with adaptations specific to the local agricultural context.

Each of these academic programs is designed to meet both national educational standards and local development needs, incorporating elements of indigenous knowledge and cultural preservation where appropriate. The university regularly reviews and updates its curriculum to ensure relevance to emerging industry demands and regional development goals.
