Nintendo Music is an audio streaming service developed by Nintendo. It is exclusively for users subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online, an online subscription service for the Nintendo Switch video game console.[2] The platform was released in select countries on October 30, 2024.

Announcement

Nintendo announced the application on X (formerly Twitter) on October 30, 2024, and announced that it would be launching later that day. The post included a trailer showcasing an interface. Nintendo also said that more music from more games would be added over time.[3]

Features

As of launch, the service incorporates affiliated franchises such as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda and Donkey Kong.[4] Users can select music to stream to their device on-demand, or listen to existing playlists. In addition, the application allows unique affordances such as extending track playback to 15, 30, or 60 minutes, downloading tracks for offline listening, creation of custom playlists, and background listening.[5] Nintendo Music providers three type of audio quality, first is data saving which is approximately 64kbps, second is balanced which is approximately 192kbps and third is high quality which is approximately 320kbps.[6] The application also includes a feature that allows users to remove tracks that may spoil games that they have not finished.[7]

Release

Users can stream a variety of video game music, largely soundtracks, from licensed Nintendo titles. Announced on October 30, 2024, the app was released the same day in Australia, Denmark, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, South Korea, including European, some South American and some North American countries for Android and iOS. Additional countries are expected to follow.[1]

With the launch of the Nintendo Music app on October 30, 2024, 23 soundtracks from various games and consoles were made available at launch. As of October 31, 2024, there are 24 soundtracks currently available and 8 soundtracks confirmed to be coming in the future, including:[8]

Reception

Kyle Barr of Gizmodo called the application "surprisingly good" but criticized the small selection of music available at launch.[11] Fans, journalists, and developers criticized the app for not crediting the soundtrack composers.[9][12]
