The Pakistan Mathematical Society (Urdu: پاکستان ریاضیاتی معاشرہ, Acronym: PakMS), is a learned society for mathematical sciences, possibly the largest learned society of its own kind to promote mathematics in the country. It is a non-profit organization. The Pakistan Mathematical Society is an association of professional mathematicians dedicated to promote mathematical science and research and interest in the country.[7] The organization annually published various publications, supports conferences and workshops.

History

15th May 2001, Mathematicians at Quaid-e-Azam University convened a moot at the Best Western Hotel in Islamabad.[8] More than 70 professional mathematicians, post graduate and post doctoral mathematicians, gathered in the Attendance Hall of the Best Western Hotel. There, it was decided to establish a society catering for the needs of mathematical sciences and mathematicians in Pakistan.

26th June 2001, Pakistan Mathematical Society was founded by Emeritus Professor Qaiser Mushtaq. At a function held at Allama Iqbal Open University, the constitution of the society was passed; officers and executive members were elected.

The PakMS applied for registration on 16th November 2001. After a lengthy scrutiny it was finally registered under the ACT XXI of 1860. It was also registered with the Pakistan Science Foundation on 17 February 2003.[9]

PakMS has reciprocity relations with several mathematical societies of the world. Also it is currently the adhering organization of the International Mathematical Union on Pakistan.

Membership

Pakistan Mathematical Society’s membership is open for any person who holds at least a BS in mathematics, irrespective of gender, race, creed, region or sect. The member is approved by the Executive Council which meets quarterly in the first weeks of January, April, July, and October.  

Administrative body

The governing body of the Society is the Executive Council. It includes five elected office bearers, namely, President, Vice-President, General Secretary, Treasurer, Information Secretary and five Executive Members. The Executive Council is elected in a quorum of annual general meeting (AGM) at the end of every second year. In concurrence to the constitutional clauses, the Executive Council meets quarterly in the first weeks of January, April, July, and October. The Minutes of four meetings are recorded in the archive of the Society.

Regular Features

Pakistan Mathematical society has six regular annual activities. They are the following.

  1. Executive Council meets quarterly in the first weeks of January, April, July, and October. Its proceedings are minuted and placed in the archive.
  2. PakMS Newsletter is published quarterly in the first weeks of January, April, July, and October.
  3. PakMS (Gold) Medal is given to an outstanding and influential mathematician of Pakistan every year if nominations are received.
  4. A three day International Pure Mathematics Conference (www.pmc.org.pk) is co-organised every year in August/September in Islamabad.
  5. Annual General Meeting is held on 31st December every year.
  6. Election for the Executive Council is held biennially on 31st December.

Publications

The PakMS publishes quarterly newsletter, known as PakMS Newsletter (ISSN 1816-1925). It is free of cost and posted at the website of the Society. It is also exchanged with the mathematical societies with whom PakMS has reciprocity arrangements. In March 2002, first issue was published. The Society published two issues in the first year and three issues in the second year. Afterwards, the society has been publishing four issues every year.[10]
