Mário Ricardo da Silva Velho (born 20 August 1998) is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays for Primeira Liga club Farense as a goalkeeper.
Club career
[edit]Braga
[edit]Born in Vila Nova de Famalicão, Braga District, Velho joined Braga's academy when he was 14.[2] On 23 August 2017, he made his professional debut with the reserve team in a 2–1 away loss against Penafiel in the LigaPro.[3]
During his spell, Velho played second-fiddle to Tiago Sá (who later appeared in several matches for the main squad) and Rogério Santos.[4][5]
Farense
[edit]On 31 July 2020, Velho signed a two-year contract with Primeira Liga club Farense.[6] In the 2022–23 season, he contributed 22 games as his side finished runners-up and returned to the main division after a two-year absence, while they conceded a league-best 34 goals; subsequently, he agreed to an extension until June 2026.[7][8]
Velho's maiden appearance in the top flight took place on 12 August 2023, in a 3–0 home defeat to Casa Pia.[9] In December, he was named Primeira Liga's Goalkeeper of the Month, after helping his team, secure two draws; a 1–1 away draw against Benfica on 8 December at the Estádio da Luz, his side best result against them in 27 years,[10] and a 0–0 goalless home draw to Estrela da Amadora.[11] With Farense struggling in the league, following a winless run of nine matches, Velho amassed 13 saves, during the month of February, despite his team record of two losses and two draws, his performances proved to be crucial in their difficult month, leading him to named the Primeira Liga's Goalkeeper of the Month for the second time.[12]
In April, his team enjoyed a good run of form, despite conceding three goals to Benfica on 22 April in a 3–1 home loss, he only conceded four goals during that month, with his winning two matches, draw and losing one match, he was named April's Goalkeeper of the Month.[13] On 5 May, he suffered an injury in his right hand, forcing him to miss Farense's last two matches of the season.[14] With Farense avoiding relegation, finishing 10th place in the league, despite suffering two losses in Velho's absence, he was named the Goalkeeper of the Season in the Primeira Liga, registering the most saves in the league with 143 saves in 32 matches, being included in the Best XI.[15]
In the summer of 2024, Velho was linked with a move to Benfica, but they rejected a transfer, due to Farense asking Benfica to pay his €10 million release clause. This led to Velho agreeing to extend his contract with them until 2028.[16]
International career
[edit]Velho was not capped by Portugal at any youth level. On 4 October 2024, he was called by the senior team for matches against Poland and Scotland in the UEFA Nations League.[17]
