San Marino has participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest three times since its debut in the 2013 contest.[1] The Sammarinese participant broadcaster in the contest is Radiotelevisione della Repubblica di San Marino (SMRTV). Following a nine-year absence after the 2015 contest, SMRTV will return to the contest in 2024.
History
[edit]Radiotelevisione della Repubblica di San Marino (SMRTV) is a full member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), thus eligible to participate in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. SMRTV attempted to participate in the contest in 2011 in Yerevan, Armenia; however, it withdrew before the contest as it had not found a representative in time.[1] It made its debut in the contest in 2013 in Kyiv, Ukraine.[1] According to Giovanni, the announcer of the Sammarinese points in 2013, San Marino used a jury. In 2013 and 2015, SMRTV selected its entrant internally, while in 2014 it used "Vocine Nuove Castrocaro" as a selection.
In 2015, Michele Perniola, Sammarinese representative in 2013, and Anita Simoncini, a member of girlband The Peppermints who participated in 2014, were chosen together to perform in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015. SMRTV announced that it would not return to the contest in 2016. On 3 September 2024 SMRTV announced that it will return to the contest after their nine-year absence.[2][3]
