Satya Narayana Charka

Satya Narayana Charka is a Kathak dancer, teacher, and choreographer.[1][2] He was taught by Pundit R.K. Shukla, Dr. Nataraja Ramakrishna, Dr. Maya Rao, Pandit Bhagwandas Varma, Pundit Shambhu Maharaj, Shrimati Maya Rao and Birju Maharaj. Among his many awards is the first prize in the All-India Dance Competition. In 1981, he became the director of the East-West School of Dance in Monroe, New York.

He teaches around New York, and performs dance and dance dramas such as Shakuntala and Ramayana internationally.

Kathak Teachings and Contributions[edit]

  • 1969 to 1972, Pt. Charka has taught at the American Education Foundation and the American International School.
  • During the years 1972 to 1975, Pt. Charka showcased his artistry and shared his profound knowledge as a visiting professor in Japan and Hong Kong.
  • Appointed as “Demonstrator in Classical Dance” by Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Conferring a prestigious appointment as “Director, Indian Cultural Activities” at the Ballet and Indian Dance Institute, Tokyo, in 1974.
  • Pt. Charka was honored by “Chinese University”, Kowloon, Hong Kong for consecutively teaching Kathak for three years from 1973 to 1975. From 1976 - 1979
  • Pt. Charka was a dance instructor at the Indian Cultural Centre, Suva, Fiji Islands.
  • In 1976, a group of Pt. Charka’s accomplished students performed at the Pacific Festival of Arts in Rotorua, New Zealand. In 1976, A team of Pt. Charka’s students were chosen to perform in the August presence of Queen Elizabeth during her Silver Jubilee Tour of the South Pacific region. In 1980 - 81
  • Pt. Charka was nominated as a guest teacher at Bodenwieser Dance Centre, Sydney, and acted as a demonstrator for teachers in the Department of Education, NSW, between 1980-81
  • In 1982, Pt. Charka was nominated as a guest teacher at the School of Performing Arts in New York City.
  • Pt. Charka participated in the National Conference "Development through the Dance" at the Association of Dance Education, Sydney.
  • From 1981 to till date (42 years) - Pt. Charka chaired the position of Director of the East-West School of Dance in Monroe, NY, USA.
  • In 1975, Pt. Charka performed alongside Fumiko Yazawa at Koseinenkin Kaikan Hall, Tokyo. In 1982,
  • In 1991, Pt. Charka directed and choreographed the “Ensemble Kathak” where his team performed, and excerpts from “Krishna Leela” and his solo performance at “World Music Institute”, New York, USA.
  • In 1996, On the 26th Anniversary of “Old First Concerts” and “Yoga Society of San Francisco” - Pt. Charka composed and directed the “Kathak Parampara”
  • In 1997, On the occasion of the 14th International Ramayana Conference, Houston, Texas - Pt. Charka directed & choreographed “Ramayana” a Dance Drama at East-West School of Dance, at Ananda Ashram, New York.
