It introduced the franchised distribution of greeting cards to convenience retail outlets and became a market leader in the UK and the Republic of Ireland.[6] The company grew to service 17,500 retail outlets, employing over 100 franchisees and generating 16 million[clarification needed] of greeting card sales annually. Card Connection was sold in 2008 to UK Greetings, a subsidiary of American Greetings Inc., and remains one of their key divisions.[7]

Hulme has been involved in teaching and mentoring entrepreneurs. He became an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Kingston University where he mentored students, judged startup contests, and taught various entrepreneurial finance workshops.[8] He served as a programme tutor for the Goldman Sachs Small Businesses Programme at University College London.[9][10] He also serves as the Programme Director for the MSc Entrepreneurship at University College London School of Management and is currently a professor teaching entrepreneurial finance.[11]
