Season of what?

[edit]

The lead currently reads:

The 2009–10 Serie B season will be the seventy-eighth since its establishment.

Season of what? Can someone familar with this article please clarify? Thanks.—C45207 | Talk 00:43, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Its the 78th Serie B season since Serie B was established as a single division below Serie A in 1929. Before then, the top teams where organized into multiple divisions where the top teams moved on to playoff rounds or to a final round-robin division during a football season in order to determine a champion. Since 1929, both Serie A & Serie B have used the double round-robin format.Juve2000 (talk) 00:53, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I am asking genuine questions. Thanks for taking the time to improve the article.
I, personally, know very little about soccer/football. What are Serie A and Serie B? Football leagues? Football championship tournaments? Are they divisional? regional? national? Mens, womens, or mixed? (Are there mixed teams?) What's an "edition"? Is it a football term I just don't know? To me, the FIFA World Cup lead explains the subject with enough detail for someone unassociated with football that I know the context for the rest of the page. If I knew more, I'd improve the section myself, but I'd rather someone who knows what's going on lend a hand. Thanks.—C45207 | Talk 04:09, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Follow the link to the Serie B main page. Maybe that will help. Juve2000 (talk) 03:24, 17 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That still leaves this article with a poor lead. Most of the questions were rhetorical, to demonstrate where I think the lead needs improvement.—C45207 | Talk 14:21, 17 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

During several automated bot runs the following external link was found to be unavailable. Please check if the link is in fact down and fix or remove it in that case!
