Group tables and match templates

[edit]

@Paninigenie:, @Rais Namiq:, @Chanheigeorge:, @S.A. Julio: Is it required to make seperate tempelates for the group tables and group matches as what has been done for group A? I think just like other tournaments all the content can be added and edited in the main page itself. We are probably not expecting a full match summary type pages as well. Should we revert this page back to its original condition along with deleting the tempelates which have been made with it?--Anbans 585 (talk) 09:01, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see the need for group table and match templates, since I can just watch one page for all relevant edits. Chanheigeorge (talk) 15:30, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think we should and a template for a each group and mimic the process used in the Africa Cup of Nations since there are sixteen teams (that's just 8 lesser than the Africa Cup of Nations). I think there should be a separate page and table template for each of the groups A, B, C, and D. Paninigenie (talk) 18:49, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Paninigenie: There are a number of tournaments that see 16 teams, and even more than that, but most of them (if not all) have a single page. Creating a template doesn't solve anything here. If you are looking for easy content management then that can easily be handled by editing the subsections. Nowadays (for the new tournaments), the match cards aren't even entered in templates, and instead, separate pages are added so that a detailed summary of each match can be added. We aren't probably expecting to write a detailed summary about each match, that kind of thing is usually only done for the major continental senior championship and the main world cup.--Anbans 585 (talk) 19:34, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Anbans 585: But this is a major competition in Africa. So it is better to have the group tables as templates for easy use, such as in the Final article or the group's article. I don't think we need think we need the matches as templates. Paninigenie (talk) 03:07, 11 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Paninigenie: It is a major competition in Africa, but it is not like the matches are regarded as A matches. The matches are not even regarded as friendlies by FIFA for ranking purpose. Also, if you are concerned about sharing groups info across pages then that is not done nowadays using templates and is instead done by directly embedding the info into the page. See 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification – AFC Second Round page for reference. Before and after the group table you would notice a keyword named 'onlyinclude', this helps referencing the tables across pages by directly invoking the sub-sections. For reference, you can also view the previous iteration of CHAN, where all the content was inside a single page. The point here is, that instead of solving things here templating would make editing more difficult since such a distributed system where nothing except the final would have a detailed summary (and also does not require a detailed summary) will create problems when monitoring the changes. Another example here is that UEFA's Nations League which isn't considered the primary continental championship also does not have detailed summaries. 2020–21 UEFA Nations League A page has only match by match goalscorers but not any other details. Dividing the 16 teams here would have caused unnecessary latency.--Anbans 585 (talk) 07:05, 11 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Anbans 585: I understand the onlyinclude functions. I think that we could create separate pages for each group and shift the group table to the page concerned. Paninigenie (talk) 08:15, 11 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Paninigenie: Or you can instead add the groups in a unified group template similar to Template:2019 Africa Cup of Nations group tables, and remove the individual group pages altogether as you initially proposed.--Anbans 585 (talk) 08:24, 11 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Anbans 585: I will move the group A table template to common group table template. However, I will create new pages for each group for detailed match information. Paninigenie (talk) 08:31, 11 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Paninigenie: What kind of detailed information are you planning to add, can you provide an example of such a case? The only info required is the match scorers, referees, report and the stadium. What kind of information requires exclusive pages?
@Anbans 585: I thought we could add detailed line-ups like those in Africa Cup of Nations articles. Paninigenie (talk) 08:35, 11 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Paninigenie: Yes that is the point, for a tier two competition you would not be probably preparing the match sheets like the images available on 2018 FIFA World Cup Group H, even if you plan on adding match summaries neither you would find editors who would want to write the match summary, nor would users have any interest in the details. The lineups themselves can be seen in the match report link attached to the bottom of the page. Just check the previous pages for this tournament and you will find how this is usually maintained. There are parallels across different confederations like UEFA, AFC etc of which I can provide reference. As I mentioned before these matches and the tournament itself aren't regarded as 'Tier-1' competition so that it would require seperate page. The fact is very obvious from the total number of editors and total number of active editors, along with the other numbers. You can also find a discussion on the 2018 page which is somewhat relevant to this discussion.--Anbans 585 (talk) 08:45, 11 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
