Finnan Island

[edit]

There are two such islands in Loch Sheil, Eilean Fhianain, a small island with a burial ground at NM752683 and the larger Eilean Ghleann Fhionainn near the monument at NM904802. The former may well be the intended burial place, but it seems to me unlikely that either of them ever had a school, and certainly not one that required "him to teach at various locations throughout the island." Is there another and larger island of the same name somewhere? Ben MacDui 14:54, 20 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Early life: His father was minister for "Eilean Fhìonain, lived at Dalilea in Moidart". This is presumably the Dalelai at NM734691 on the north shore of Loch Sheil west of Acharacle. The Eilean Fhianain at NM751683 is nearby.

Missioner: "In 1729 Alasdair is appointed to a school at Finnan Island". Not clear where this is. It may be that "Finnan Island" was a local name for an area at the south end of Loch Sheil.

Death: There is a web reference for his death here although no mention of "Eilean Fhionnain - Island Finnan". Ben MacDui 16:22, 20 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

RCAHMS reports on various remains on Eilean Fhianain inclduing a gravestone that has the initials D MD and state "these cast doubt on its traditional identification as the grave of the Rev Alexander MacDonald ('Maighstir Alasdair', d.1724), father of the celebrated Gaelic poet of the same name." I think we can be pretty certain this is both the parish(?) of "Eilean Fhìonain" his father looked after and the intended site of the son's burial. The school remains a mystery. There was a chapel on one of the Finnan Islands. My guess is that "Finnan Island" was a synecdoche for the parish of that chapel. Maproom (talk) 07:43, 31 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple issues

[edit]

This article is one of several that is affected by issues of sourcing, neutrality, bloating and straying off-topic, discussed at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Scotland#Bloating_in_Gaels_articles. Mutt Lunker (talk) 17:22, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
