Proposed move
[edit]Sherpa is not his last name. He has no last name. Sherpa has been foolishly added in the past by many westerners (who assume that only pop musicians can have a single name), but I think we should now move this to either Apa or Appa (both spellings seem to be acceptable). - Appa currently goes to a page about a character in some cartoon, and Apa redirects to a disambiguation page. Appa seems easier to use. Alternately, the title could simply be changed to Appa (Sherpa) (which already redirects to the current page). 71.199.28.124 17:00, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
- I second the motion above... as his name is not Apa Sherpa, the name should be qualified accordingly as "Apa (Sherpa)". Does someone who knows how to do this make the change. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.35.172.123 (talk) 17:40, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
Official discussion of page move proposals
[edit]- The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the proposal was no consensus to support move. JPG-GR (talk) 01:12, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
- (Discuss) -- This is an official proposal that the page Appa Sherpa be moved to Appa (Sherpa), which is currently occupied by a redirect with more than one edit. Sherpa is not a surname in the sense meant elsewhere, and is only a convenience in interacting with bodies that don't understand Sherpa convention; in fact, there are clan names which are more narrow than the broad designation "Sherpa," but which are never or rarely thought to amount to a surname. Therefore it makes sense to label Sherpa as having only a single name (also see discussion above). I have concurrently proposed page moves for other pages about Sherpa in order to have consistency across Wikipedia. I would also note that there are several articles in the Category:Sherpa summiters of Mount Everest who are Sherpa, but who do not have Sherpa used as a surname in the article title. For example, Ang Rita. The parenthetical (Sherpa) may not even be necessary for pages that do not have conflicts (Appa by itself was already taken) --Leoniceno (talk) 22:44, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
- Keep What "sense" is meant "elsewhere" (where?) or "thinking about a surname"? Most surnames refer to places, tribes, or occupations of some sort. Your name is generally whatever you claim. If he's ever used it as his surname, then it is. Even if he just did so "for the convenience of outsiders." Potatoswatter (talk) 07:40, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
- Although I could agree with the move in principle, absolutely reflecting the correctness of a person's name is not the only factor to be used in deciding Wikipedia article titles. Just because "Sherpa has been foolishly added in the past by many westerners" is not enough reason for the move. WP:COMMONNAME ("Use common names") is more important. Many people are referred to by anachronistic or "incorrect" names in English media and are therefore still found at those locations in Wikipedia (e.g. Suharto, not Soeharto; Pierre L'Enfant, not Peter L'Enfant). Many others have clan names or non-surname appendages on their names as well (e.g. Saddam Hussein, given name + patronymic; Dulla Bhatti, given name + tribe; Ravindra Jain, given name + religion). To better support this move, I would suggest presenting some affrimative evidence that the subjects are not referred to as "Xxx Sherpa" in at least some situations. Ideally, you would need evidence that the subjects themselves have declared themselves not to be named Sherpa and that English-language sources have acknowledged or followed such a dictate. For example, it is claimed in the article that Appa now lives in the USA. Evidence that he does not use "Sherpa" with his name would help prove this case. And as an aside, Pemba Doma and Pasang Lhamu don't need a parenthetical disambiguator since there is only one subject by each name. — AjaxSmack 15:34, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
