Notability

[edit]

Notability is very thin here, feels like a WP:BLP1E? Can't see a material article being developed? 78.18.228.191 (talk) 14:23, 3 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Before citing BLP1E, hopefully you noticed that the BLP part stands for "biographies of living persons". That causes me to wonder if you actually looked at the few sources provided. They reveal that Marshall died in 1951, so BLP obviously doesn't apply. Then, while giving some measure of acknowledgement to this being a biography, you insert a random WikiProject banner while failing to insert one for WP Biography. I'm totally confused as to what you were after in doing that. It merely adds to the existing lack of effort to build this entry as a biography as opposed to some sort of fanboy exercise.
Since this isn't a BLP, there's no harm in at least giving it a shot. There are plenty of notable people who have been dead for decades whose notability isn't exactly recognized through a Google search. There's no point in pretending that a Google search is the sole arbiter of notability unless you're after a perpetually third-rate information resource instead of "the sum total of human knowledge". The notability here is very weak and his notability is tied to one act. The refs are either not RS quality, or, are localised (i.e. he has no national notanility). I think that in the absence of better refs, this should be checked at AfD; I have a feeling that it will end up there at some stage. Aszx5000 (talk) 11:35, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
AfD has been added. KnowledgeIsPower9281 (talk) 15:43, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Aszx5000:, I've added some sources, and mentioned two books in AfD discussion. I feel it's sufficient to satisfy WP:SPORTSPERSON. There are also two books I've mentioned (only has snippet views on Google) in AfD itself. Graywalls (talk) 12:09, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That is helpful @Graywalls but I think we still just have mentions / verification in lower tier sources and no quality source interested in doing a piece on him as a notable subject?. If there was a List of highpointing records in the United States, he would be a natural redirect to that, but unfortunately none exists. Pity not to preserve something here given his record (and your efforts to improve it), but can't see a his BLP lasting long-term on WP if something more substantial can't be found? Sorry but appreciate the efforts! Aszx5000 (talk) 21:41, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Aszx5000:, actually the Oregonlive piece in itself qualifies as a significant coverage. That piece is essentially devoted to him. "One event" would be for someone who got a coverage for one drunk driving incident. Graywalls (talk) 21:43, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Worth noting; not a BLP since he's deceased. While I nominated the article for AfD I think it can be preserved if it's written in a more biographical tone. KnowledgeIsPower9281 (talk) 22:13, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The current conditions of the article is usually not a factor unless it's a total promotional garbage.
No matter how presentable and "well sourced looking" the article maybe, if it's determined to be WP:NOAMOUNT, the article shouldn't remain. The most common cause of people, organizations and bands and albums is failing notability. Graywalls (talk) 04:19, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Having thought about this again, and adding Graywalls new refs to current refs, I would be in favor of keeping it under WP:PRESERVE. If a larger highpointing articls - or list of records for US highpointing - was created, I would think this would be better redirected to such an article, but would rather keep what we have here, given that Graywalls has gone to the trouble of improving it, and it stands as a useful item for a reader.
