History/Etymology

It's kind of strange to call this the "BSD" checksum algorithm, since it predates BSD -- AFAIK it was present in the same form in V7 Unix. —Steve Summit (talk) 21:55, 25 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Worth remembering that per WP:Common name, it often doesn't matter to us if a name is wrong or misleading, if everyone else is using the name, we generall use it too. It isn't always simple and nowadays with relatively unknown things (and probably even with fairly well know things) we often can actually have a big influence on what people call something, but I guess that's life. The URL listed above is not necessarily 100% accurate. The main issue is there is a large chunk of GPL code on this page, that at the very least is not properly attributed. I can't find the official rules for how code has to be licensed but I dislike finding a chunk of GPL code on wikipedia when looking at how things work for fear of accidently violating its copyright.
