Battle of Bazeilles
This 1873 painting, Les dernières cartouches ("The last bullets") depicts a small detachment from the "Blue Division" of the French Army's Troupes de marine in the Battle of Bazeilles on 1 September 1870. As the French Army retreated from its loss at the Battle of Sedan, this group remained in the last house on the road to Sedan, fighting to the last bullet to cover the retreat.Artist: Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe de Neuville;
Restoration: Adam Cuerden

Bavarian Losses

According to two printed sources cited in the German article on the subject de:Kampf um Bazeilles, total Bavarian losses of all kinds (killed, wounded, missing) in the Battle_of_Sedan_ were 213 officers and 3876 other ranks. The fighting in Bazeilles, which was part of this battle, is said to have accounted for 64 officers and about one thousand men. So it seems hard to believe that 7000 Bavarians should have died in Bazeilles alone, because that would be almost twice their total losses (not just dead) suffered on September 1, 1871. This is supported by the article on the Battle of Sedan, which mentions that the number of Prussians and Bavarians KiA combined was 2,320 dead.

Pending proof for the alleged 7000 dead, I suggest we stick with the figures from the sources mentioned. Textor (talk) 11:23, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
