Handout

[edit]

The handout provided by the church at the ceremony where my grandfather received this medal says:

Pope Pius VI bestowed the first papal Benemerenti Medal in 1791 as am award for military courage in the defense of the Papal States.

This contradicts with the information in the wikipedia article. A fact check would be useful. --67.160.200.65 04:24, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to know who can help me my father Nicolaas Heyns received this price from the POPE but is not listed. Upington,South Africa — Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.141.1.80 (talk) 12:35, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Recipients versus Notable Recipients

[edit]

This article is rapidly becoming a list of medal recipients. It would appear to me that this is not what a Wikipedia article is intended to become. Should the recipeints section become a Notable Recipients and the list be trimmed down? I believe that it should be, but I was looking for consensus before being too bold. I agree - the list needs to have a focal point. It reads like it's a list of all the benemerenti but of course, it is not. I received one in 2010 and the list for our Archdiocese alone for that year was 127. The list should be very specific to list notable recipients and perhaps recipients that are unique in some way. The award itself is for "Long and exceptional service to the Catholic Church" which surely makes all recipients Notable and Unique in there own way.
@Kevinvomalley: Long service medals whether for church or government, typically do not meet the notability threshold that Wikipedia looks for. I would agree, that within their parish or archdiocese they are likely notable, but not Wikipedia notable. Thanks for contributing to the conversation. Cheers. The list of recipients is now - may 2017 - the main part of this article. In my opinion, this contradcits the character of a Wikipedia article. Lists are lists and articles are articles. Thus, I suggest that the list of recipients is moved to a seprate article to keep this article straight.IndyMeister (talk) 07:19, 2 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I created a new article for the recipients (List of Benemerenti medal recipients) and moved the whole list to that article (IndyMeister (talk) 12:31, 7 May 2018 (UTC)).[reply]

Cédric Tornay

[edit]

Alois Estermann says he refused to award Cédric Tornay the Benemeriti medal for 3-years service: this seems incongruous with the list of recipients as it is.

Are these recipients in addition to Swiss Guard, of which there seems to be no mention, and if so is it usual to be awarded after three years? If not is the cited article reliable, or was Tornay just unrealistic? --xensyriaT 19:52, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

L'unique médaille "Benemerenti" décernée par Jean Paul Ier

[edit]

No listing without citations

[edit]

Nobody should be listed on this page without a published reference documenting the award. Many of the persons involved are living, so this page should be treated under the rules for BLP (biographies of living persons). Chonak (talk) 06:51, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Per Wikipedia's foundational principles, items that cannot be verified with reliable sources can be removed. Separately, from the sourcing issue, per WP:LISTPEOPLE, should the recipients list be limited to "Notable recipients", i.e. those with a Wikipedia article? That is how most articles concerning awards/decorations treat their recipients' sections. EricSerge (talk) 13:25, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A Dead Pope Awarded the Medal?

[edit]

The article states that Pope Benedict XV awarded the medal to Hilda Currie in 1939. How can that be? He died in 1922.John Paul Parks (talk) 04:10, 27 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

BRD

[edit]

So I boldly edited the page and it was reverted. Over the years on this talk page, two other editors and I briefly discussed improving this page by removing non-notable recipients of the medal. Forgetting about it until the other day, I revisited the talk page to see that there was no additional discussion, so I acted boldly. There is precedent on other medal pages for a "notable recipients" section. Additionally, few if any of the listed recipients is referenced and per policy unreferenced material may be removed. So what is consensus at this point? Will this be a list of every non-notable recipient that anyone can find, or will it be a referenced article about a Papal honour with a few referenced notable recipients listed?
