Article problems

[edit]

I'm quite concerned by the sources cited here.

Every study quoted in the "Mechanism of Action" section refers to piperine, not to bioperine. In some cases, this is made explicit in the text; some others, however, generalise results from piperine as though they were known to apply. ("... bioperine may enhance the bioavailability of the nutrients it is combined with, particularly curcumin..."). There's no cited sources which directly refer to the effects of bioperine, and the cumulative effect of the section is quite misleading.

PubMed finds two studies which refer to bioperine, but in both cases it seems to be an additional ingredient in an energy product being studied, and doesn't seem to affect the results in either case. Hendrix, C. R.; Housh, T. J.; Mielke, M.; Zuniga, J. M.; Camic, C. L.; Johnson, G. O.; Schmidt, R. J.; Housh, D. J. (2010). Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. 24 (3): 859–865. doi:10.1519/JSC.0b013e3181ae7976. PMID 19834348., Walter, A. A.; Herda, T. J.; Ryan, E. D.; Costa, P. B.; Hoge, K. M.; Beck, T. W.; Stout, J. R.; Cramer, J. T. (2009). "Acute effects of a thermogenic nutritional supplement on cycling time to exhaustion and muscular strength in college-aged men". The only reference of any form which seems to address bioperine itself is [1], which is a) a dead link, and b) appears to be linked to a rather dubious-sounding weight-loss pill.

All told, it doesn't seem that there's any actual sources here supporting any of the claims made for the drug! A merge and redirect to piperine may be appropriate. Shimgray | talk | 15:20, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with your concerns. This article contains dubious claims (and many others have already been removed) except for those that seem to refer specifically to piperine itself, not this pepper extract which may contain piperine. Either deleting this article or merging into piperine may be best. ChemNerd (talk) 17:02, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Per this recently-added record, listing "Black Pepper Extract (Bioperine) Yielding 95% Piperine", it seems that bioperine may just be a "trade name" for piperine, rather than a different compound. Perhaps redirect to piperine and mention it there as a name it's sold under? Shimgray | talk | 19:12, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
