Move to "Ikhwan al-Safa"
[edit]Search results show that in English texts, "Ikhwan al-Safa" is at least as common as "Brethren of Purity". I think it's better to use the original term (for the title), rather than a loose translation of it. Jahangard 22:18, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
- Disagree. That's not the original term, just a common shortening of Ikhwan al-Safa wa Khullan al-Wafa wa Ahl al-Hamd wa abna al-Majd. And there are many many different ways to render it; I disagree that "Ikhwan al-Safa" is predominant as a term - in my research, I saw variants and the translated names used more often. In general, I prefer the translation. (Besides, moving would be painful.) --Gwern (contribs) 00:11 17 May 2007 (GMT)
- I'd agree to the name change. Even if "Ikhwan al-Safa" is a shortened name, that's the one I've come across most often, and I haven't seen any significant variants. Besides, Britannica, Routledge, the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy have articles with the orginal term. On the other hand, the translation "Brethren of Purity" could have other forms (as mentioned in the article). Another thing... I was wondering if we should merge the article on the Encyclopedia of the Brethren of Purity with this one? --Bluerain talk 06:43, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
- Ikhwan As-Saffa is probably more common in modern scholarship - and entirely legit, even ibn Taymiyya uses it; the full rhyming title was likely more for rhetorical effect than any real use — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marcuschenevix (talk • contribs) 15:56, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

- That was added without a source. I have removed it. Richard-of-Earth (talk) 04:26, 12 November 2021 (UTC)
