[edit]

I heard he leaked an "asteroid near miss" story to the press in the mid to late 1990s. But this article blames the leak on someone else. What's the real story? --Uncle Ed (talk) 13:28, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hagiography

[edit]

This article praises Marsden, as an example of finding "lost" objects. But it was actually a woman astronomer (and two male colleagues) who found the lost observations of the XF11 asteroid that early press reports said could hit earth.

As I recall the way the incident unfolded, Marsden who fanned the flames of fear - while the JPL astronomers (who had not been given advance notice) took less than 72 hours to find the "missing" observations. --Uncle Ed (talk) 04:45, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Comet Scare

[edit]

Didn't he also say that Comet Swift-Tuttle might strike the earth? [1] --Uncle Ed (talk) 16:22, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Purgatorio Ratio

[edit]

in 2003 he proposed the Purgatorio Ratio as an alternative to the 2001 Torino Scale of asteroid impact risk.[2],[3] - could mention here if nowhere else ? - Rod57 (talk) 13:06, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
