Richard "Cheech" Marin was born and raised in Los Angeles. In order to flee the U.S. draft during the Vietnam War, Marin headed to Vancouver, British Columbia, where he met Tommy Chong. Chong was a native Canadian who had moved to Vancouver to buy a music club, the Elegant Parlour, where he played guitar and sang in the house band. When Chong discovered improvisational comedy, he decided to try his hand at it, performing out of his brother's Vancouver nightclub, the Shanghai Junk. Cheech was among the young comics who showed up to perform with Chong's comedy troupe, "City Works", which resulted in Chong offering him a job with the troupe.

Two years later, when "City Works" disbanded, the two teamed up as "Cheech & Chong" and set out to tour, eventually ending up in California. The duo's comedy revolved around drugs and the rock and roll lifestyle. When they performed at L.A.'s Troubador Club, a record executive saw their potential and they were subsequently signed to record their first album, "Cheech & Chong", which went gold and led to a string of successful comedy albums.

The albums led to a series of successful films including "Up In Smoke, "Cheech and Chong's Next Movie" and "Still Smokin'" These films catapulted the duo to wide fame and garnered them a lasting cult following.
