I believe that Tomato Sausages were first created in Chesterfield some time ago. Maybe someone could research that as I don't know for certain.

Education

[edit]

I've removed the information about St.Mary's results... that belongs in an article either dedicated ot Education in Chesterfield or an article on the school itself. The statistics given just give percentages, they don't even state what they are of and hence useless. 70% of what?

I've also removed the information about the primary, infant and junior schools. Saying there are main ones is just not true, there must be well over 30 in Chesterfield, Hady Primary and Hasland Infatns and Juniors are two other big ones I can think of.

I'd appreciate it if someone could find evidence to backup the claim abotu the size of Chesterfield college.

can we leave the link to deincourt school please? and if people could help with developing that page it would be useful too. - talk to the schools project? Victuallers 08:46, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mistake in road names

[edit]

I've changed "Hollywell Cross" to "Holywell"... that's the correct name.

Please let me know if I've gone about this the wrong way, as this is my first edit. :) Silverleaf79 02:47, 11 February 2007 (UTC)—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Silverleaf79 (talkcontribs) 02:45, 11 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Sorry it's the Chesterfield accent, skewing my spelling. Hollymoorside anyone? --79.68.68.215 (talk) 21:23, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

twin cities

[edit]

as to city twinnings, "It should be noted that very little fanfare is made of this and most residents are unaware that Chesterfield is twinned with anywhere at all." - is that necessary? that's true for every place i can think of. city twinnings are never about "fanfare", and the passage sets a negative light on chesterfield's city twinnings, while i'm sure it's not any less or more negative than in any other place. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 77.177.167.33 (talk) 03:03, 28 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Largest town in Derbyshire?

[edit]

Surely Derby is bigger? LondonStatto 20:37, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Derby is a city. This could be made clearer, and a source should be provided. violet/riga (t) 20:40, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Derby ain't in Derbyshire either... it's in Derby, a unitary authority since 1997... and don't call me Shirley.

The suggestion that Derby is not in Derbyshire is, quite frankly, preposterous. It may not be in the administrative "county" run by Derbyshire County Council, but it's still in Derbyshire. LondonStatto (talk) 07:22, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but no: as stated correctly above, Derby remains in Derbyshire for ceremonial purposes only. Aside from that the only other purpose of a county is administrative - and for that purpose Derby is not in Derbyshire. It's kind of like Pluto: if it's still called a planet, it's only because everyone's comfortable with calling it a planet - even if it's not strictly true. - Shrivenzale (talk) 12:35, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Strictly speaking (going by current administrative areas) Derby is indeed not in Derbyshire; but most readers don't know that, so when we say It is Derbyshire's largest town we give a misleading impression. I recommend following the unambiguous style of the Derbyshire article which says Outside the main city of Derby, the largest town in the county is Chesterfield. --VinceBowdren (talk) 13:55, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What about Chesterfield is the largest town in the Ceremonial county of Derbyshire, with Derby its only city or something to that effect? L.J.Skinnerwot|I did 14:47, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How about the FACT that Chesterfield IS the largest town in Derbyshire... that's not misleading at all. Derby is not a town and hasn't been since 1977, over 30 years ago. This is not disputable, even if you think Derby is in Derbyshire (which it is ceremonially), Derby ain't a town and no one is going to think it's a town either. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 150.237.47.51 (talk) 01:37, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Entertainment and leisure

[edit]

The entertainment and leisure section reads like a promotional brochure from the Derbyshire board of tourism. This is an encyclopedia and the entries should be objective and factual. Sentences such as, Chesterfield has a vast array of leisure, entertainment and social facilities, and, The shopping opportunities in Chesterfield are sizeable are at best debatable and at worst useless. By what scale of measurement are the shopping opportunities to be considered sizeable, and exactly what constitutes a vast array of social facilities?

I'm new to this editing game and don't want to tread on anyone's toes, but I feel this section in particular needs work, and if no one objects I'd like to have a crack at it.MeanerWiththeScenery 04:37, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, I see no reason why you shouldn't have a crack at it, it definatley needs work doing. Schumi555 09:16, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry but I'm quite proud of my little old town, I guess a lot of bias slipped in when I wrote that lot... 'tis true though, Chesterfield has a lot for a town of its size... just can't be arsed to find any references, so I guess it has to be binned if they can't be found. Ah well. We've got a multiplex cinema, you don't hear of small towns having stuff like that lol. Hopefully my edits to the transport section and rest of the major revamp to the "Shopping, entertainment and leisure" section were a little more successful 150.237.47.51 (talk) 01:41, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Would it be an idea to mention about this somewhere? Calvin (talk) 12:15, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Added Public Services Section

[edit]

Just added this to the article. Someone may want to rewrite it a bit, but I felt it was necessary to have on the article. Calvin (talk) 14:37, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Local Companies

[edit]

there seems to be a lack of links and related articles to Local Companies, Bryan Donkin & Co., Markham & Co.,GKN Sheebridge Stokes, Chesterfield Cylinders (TI), (At least Arnold Laver is listed), And is Gordon Lamb not a local Business worthy of a mention? Staveley Chemicals and Iron Works (British steel) also important local companies / busineses.

Any one got enough info to start suitable articles ? BulldozerD11 (talk) 01:04, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well one down Thanks to Tudorminstrel a few to go. Expanded business section a bit and added a few more with links ---BulldozerD11 (talk) 01:26, 17 August 2008 (UTC) Well done, these company articles are a great addition Victuallers (talk) 12:18, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hepworth sculpture duplication

[edit]

Why is the information about the Hepworth sculpture, given under the heading Economy repeated verbatim under the heading Arts? Surely one mention is enough and that ought to be under Arts. I propose deletion of the copy under Economy. 94.197.191.79 (talk) 20:55, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In fact, I've gone ahead and made the deletion. Even the reference was duplicated. When was the 124th September 2007, for pity's sake? 94.197.191.79 (talk) 21:02, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

MP

[edit]

Consideration should the MP Lee Rowley be on the Chesterfield wiki page? As he represents a constituency in nearby North East Derbyshire and not the Borough of Chesterfield? DavidAshfield1 (talk) 13:23, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Rowley's constituency apparently covers part of the town. There is a separate page for Chesterfield (UK Parliament constituency). Deb (talk) 14:31, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Urban Area Merge proposal

[edit]

I propose merging the Chesterfield Urban Area article into this one. I dont think its notable enough on its own for its own article and its nearly all in the Chesterfield district except for Wingerworth and Holymoorside. Eopsid (talk) 17:18, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support it makes sense to have the different definitions in 1 article per my Tamworth arguments. I'd consider splitting to Borough of Chesterfield however since Chesterfield BUA is larger than the district this may be awkward but if done we should have this article for the BUA, BUASD and unparished area. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:26, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I would strongly oppose a split with a new borough article, there is very little in the borough which isnt in the BUA, I see no benefit even if many people in the district and BUA dont consider themselves part of Chesterfield Eopsid (talk) 17:32, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Or could I suggest making a new tab with the information in the article and a mention of it in Chesterfield Staveley and Bolsover articles. RailwayJG (talk) 21:27, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'd support a separate article for Chesterfield given it has a town and other villages within its borough and they are notable given Staveley is a former mining town and Chesterfield is the second largest town in Derbyshire RailwayJG (talk) 21:28, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Bolsover isn't part of the Chesterfield Urban area. If we merged it, I would add a section to the geography part of this article. Eopsid (talk) 23:29, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The merger is now done Eopsid (talk) 18:52, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The Green Room

[edit]

little visual evidence of mining remains since the closure of the final town centre mine nicknamed “The Green Room”.

This needs removing. Unsurprisingly the town center did not have a mine called The Green Room. It was rock/punk/alternative bar. 2A00:23CC:B200:BB01:2A6:93CE:4576:E843 (talk) 23:40, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
