Change in lede

I changed this sentence in the lede: "In plate tectonics, a Divergent boundary or divergent plate boundary (also known as a constructive boundary or an extensional boundary) is a linear feature that exists between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other." to read 'two' instead of 'five' -- any particular, individual divergent boundary will involve two (possibly three) plates, but in general only two. If this sentence was meant to convey that there are, at the moment on Earth only five plate boundaries that are divergent, than it needs a separate sentence to say so (with citation of course). 71.139.1.243 (talk) 15:51, 13 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New Section: Creation of Crust

It may be worthwhile to add a separate section in this article going deeper into the formation of new oceanic crust at Mid-Ocean Ridges and the resulting ophiolite sequences that provide substantial geologic records of plate movements. This article also needs a serious fortification of its sources. Much of the facts in here have no references for people to verify.Oceanfr (talk) 06:46, 8 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

With only one referenced publication, this article lacks to provide a comprehensive, unbiased overview of subject matter; this article also lacks sufficient citation of provided reference.

It might be worth providing a reference map of Earth showing locations of divergent boundaries and how they are situated among other major plate boundaries.

Convection Theory

Thanks for pointing this out. The article needs a complete rewrite and better (some!) sourcing - I've added appropriate tags. I have a longer term plan to rewrite the main Plate Tectonics article, so I should probably address the other related articles at the same time. Don't know how long this will take. Yeah that sounds perfect! Good luck with the plate tectonics rewrite, it's such a difficult part of geography to teach without either making it impossible for beginners or totally simplifying it, I will chip in on the help when I can but I'll need to do some scholarly reading first! capstar (talk) 19:20, 15 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
