[edit]Sri Lankan authorities appeared more willing than in past years to acknowledge official responsibility for atrocities. On January 31, Sri Lankan army personnel in Batticaloa publicly acknowledged their role in large-scale massacres of civilians in the east, mentioning notorious attacks in Kokkaddicholai, Sathurukkondaan, Vanthaarumoolai, and Batticaloa. In February, the attorney general reportedly issued indictments against more than six hundred police and armed forces personnel implicated in "disappearances" that occurred before 1994--many in connection with counterinsurgency operations against the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) organization. On June 28, two soldiers were sentenced to six years in prison and fined Rs. 2,500 (U.S. $27) each for their role in an abduction and murder in 1989. [1]
Kokkadichcholai incidednt
[edit]Is disputed hence as long as it is here, the whole section can be disputed..Also , some of the incident ,we dont even know who killed those people..Since this articles is directly condemning the GOSL and readers might get the idea that see also incidents are also carried out by the GOSL.. Since that it false, I dont think this see also is relevant to this article..We don't want to deceive readers,do we ??--Iwazaki 11:05, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
Background information
[edit]Although the wording of the "Background information" section is probably only one of several points in dispute, I think it's worth addressing, since it was one of only a few issues that was actually specifically noted. Given the concerns regarding the present wording, perhaps rewording the paragraph to the following would be satisfactory:
Following the breakdown of peace talks between the government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in 1990, the Sri Lankan military mounted a series of operations against rebel-held territory in Eastern Province, mostly in Batticaloa District. There were a number of massacres and disappearances of civilians attributed to the LTTE, Sri Lankan government forces and government-allied paramilitary groups such as the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization (TELO) and People's Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE).

- You have no Axe to grind in Sri Lankan issues, all what I want is a neutral article about a massacre that was exhaustively looked at by everyone including Sri Lankan government. So from my point of view what you have written has no problems. Taprobanus 13:23, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
- No problem with that edit. Watchdogb 19:24, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
