Onomatopoeic

[edit]

Check any image board or forum that discusses these things these days. "fap" will be most prevalent. It is widely used in commercial and non commercial doujin, as well as translations of such and a variety of webcomics, pay or non. It is also starting to leak out into the real world for use in certain circles. Being used prominently at various conventions. Google result #1 for 'fap' links to the urban dictionary entry for "fap" the onomatopoeic. Otherwise, just refer to imageboards, forums and chats "fap" will be exteremly prevalent in use for such means to describe male masturbation, even nominalized or verbized: 'fapper', 'fapping' etc. (66.41.156.63 (talk) 23:27, 6 February 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Any reason for taking off the reference to Sexy Losers for the onomatopoeia for FAP? Its origin on the internet may be of interest to some people.

What's the female version of fap? Shlep? 67.116.252.210 10:37, 21 March 2007 (UTC) To answer the question above, I believe it is something like "shlick", according to sexy losers (who invented/popularized fap) JayKeaton 23:45, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

People tend to just use "fap" as a gender-neutral verb. Hanii (talk) 19:23, 9 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Neopets

[edit]

Since this more of a list than an article, there's really no encyclopedic way to mention this outside of a talk page, but I wanted to mention it here since I find it interesting and amusing. On Neopets, there are several word games, and since a lot of the site is directed towards and intended for children, certain potentionally "objectionable" words, such as "pot" and "weed", are omitted from their word database, despite having completly innocuous definitions aside from their slang usage... however, "fap" is allowed, and comes up quite often during the 3-letter round of the game Typing Terror. ("Boner" is also allowed, but that's another story.) - Ugliness Man 07:00, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is in error and should actually be listed under "fwap". Sexy Loser had it wrong.

Department of redundancy

[edit]

This is the second or third time I have removed redundant mentions of the masturbation reference. It seems like every now and then someone comes to the article, completely ignores the first sentence, and only looks at the list. Then, noticing that the list doesn't mention this meaning, adds it. Part of the problem, it seems, is that the reference in the opening sentence was a brief, almost dismissive, mention, whereas some people seem to think it should be the focus. I doubt that my recent edit will solve this problem completely, but I've expanded the opening so that this definition is a little more visible, and mentioned first. I also hope that the way I've edited it makes it clear that the list is a list of acronyms, so that adding another redudant mention of the masturbation refrence to the list would clearly be incorrect. - Ugliness Man 16:56, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FAP as the "preferred" acronym

[edit]

Note: This is actually a question, not a condemnation.

Putting FAP as "male masturbation" above the rest of the list might seem to indicate that it is the one that Wikipedians think is most worthwhile. I'm no prude, but I think we could stand to take a moment and reflect on impressions; the real question is why a pop-culture word takes precedence in a list over all the others.

Compare this list, then, with those for Slam and, more relevantly, Pop. These aren't completely consistent with each other, but it seems that putting acronyms last and onomatopoetic definitions first is normal. I'd appreciate any insight on this matter, as it'd be nice when editing disambiguation pages. --Edwin Herdman 23:37, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Whether or not that is the "real question" is obviously a matter of opinion. Put simply, when creating and maintaining a disambig page (or when deciding if an article should be renamed with a parenthetical qualifier and a disambig page put in its place, such as was discussed in the Odo article), what we must concern ourself with is the state of mind of the average schmo coming to Wikipedia looking up the word/phrase/acronym. Currently, the use of "fap" as masturbation slang is a widesperad internet term. It is reasonable to assume that many people searching for "fap" are curious as to the origin and/or accepted application of this usage. It is also important to remember that when very little importance was put on that usage (I believe it once was a barely-there off-handed mention at the bottom), several would-be editors crawl out of the woodwork and "fix" the article by adding redundant information. The primary motivation for putting it at the top, and making it clear - but not lengthy - was to make sure that anyone visiting this page, including newbies, could plainly see that it was already there.
The length of articles, and the order in which information is presented on disambig pages, is not determined by such abstract ideas of how "important" something is. The two primary concerns are clarity, and maintaining a certain level of quality (which includes reducing the temptation to add redundant garbage). Nobody's saying that a silly slang term for wanking is more important or noteworthy than fixed action pattern, just like the DS9 character of Odo isn't necessarily more important or noteworthy than Odo the Great. Wikipedia articles are not judgements. - Ugliness Man 04:14, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Furthering this idiocy, someone removed the reference on the 14th. Since then, it has been re-added, removed, altered and moved a total of 8 times. I'm going to return it, in the form it appeared before, and if this bullshit continues I think we'll have to seek some sort of mediation or review or something. - Ugliness Man 08:00, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Childish

[edit]

Why does it say a "childish" reference to male masturbation isnt that bias?(The Wise Vafhudr 04:28, 16 August 2007 (UTC))[reply]

It is biased. See WP:NPOV. However, it is also no longer in the page as of now. JohnSmith13345 (talk) 11:35, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Internet slang, redux

[edit]

We have no citation anywhere on WP for this meaning. i cant find anything outside of urban dictionary. This is a disambig page, to link to the article which discusses this meaning. until someone can create an article on the term, or a section of an article, we cant list it here. sorry.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 18:14, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You can't find anything outside of urban dictionary? Really? [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [etc.]. Check your Google. I think it's broken.
Next, we'll need references for those slang uses of poop, poo, number two, pee, cum, spew, barf, etc. - SummerPhD (talk) 19:34, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
All are unreliable sources anyways. - M0rphzone (talk) 05:50, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
fap is mentioned in serious dictionaries, see for example here. Non-native English speakers searching here for the meaning have a right to find it included. --KnightMove (talk) 09:37, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
What "right"? No one gets any more "rights" than anyone else. The majority of people who search this term already know what it means. They can go directly to masturbation without needing a disambig. Anons continue adding it because they just want to see it referenced, which isn't the purpose of a disambig anyways. - M0rphzone (talk) 06:09, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Every single person in the world once will see the term for the first time, and the context might immediately explain what it means, or not. Wikipedia's purpose is to inform people looking for information, not to leave them puzzling. --KnightMove (talk) 06:37, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In any case, these few reasons for inclusion seem to be attempts to justify by any way possible. Don't give a load of BS. - M0rphzone (talk) 05:59, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

By BS, I assume you mean "bullshit". However, it isn't sourced in that redirect either. Maybe you should remove that? - SummerPhD (talk) 21:22, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(Well it is..I actually checked to see if it was there when I used it, but I had to use crtl-f since it's pretty inconspicuous). - M0rphzone (talk) 04:26, 6 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, bullshit is an article. So is masturbation. If you are actually arguing that "fap" is not used to refer to male masturbation, you are too far gone to be helped by the hundreds of thousands of examples where this is clearly the case. If you are insisting that we must have a "reliable" source for this because it is somehow offensive, your argument is pointless. If you want a reliable source simply on the idea that everything must be sourced, I invite you to consider the material in question: it is not contentious in any way, it does not disparage anyone living or dead, it does not contradict anything, etc. It is unavoidably true that "fap" is an online term used to refer to male masturbation. Yes, it's slang. Lots of people are looking up slang terms on the internet. It typically takes a while for academic sources to catch up. - SummerPhD (talk) 05:30, 6 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. But the main point to include it here are the cases where it is not necessarily clear to the reader that male masturbation is addressed, see for example the first comment here. --KnightMove (talk) 08:06, 6 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
LOL that's what a dictionary is for. But who cares. I won't stuff any more beans. - M0rphzone (talk) 17:35, 6 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
What? That's complete nonsense! That's like arguing that the disambiguation page for Dr Death shouldn't include a link to Dr Death (Comics) because that's the page people are normally looking for when they type "Dr Death", or that the disambiguation page for MLP shouldn't link to My Little Pony for being too obvious.
