First Monday article on Wikipedia

[edit]

First Monday has an interesting article about Wikipedia here --MoRsE 14:53, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why the emphasis on the "sponsor and host," instead of the journal?

[edit]

To quote the article, "First Monday is sponsored and hosted by the University of Illinois at Chicago." The only external link is to a page at uic.edu. But the Journal "First Monday" has a website at firstmonday.org. Why concentrate on the sponsor, and not the Journal itself? Is the same done for all other journals "sponsored and hosted" by a university?

At the bottom of the article, there is a large box about the University of Illinois at Chicago. But that is not the subject of the article. This looks like an advertisement for the University. Not sure what to do about this. Can anyone make a suggestion? oldrider (talk) 02:31, 10 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! While I think there is definitely more content about the sponsor and host than the actual journal at the moment, I think that reflects the lack of information about the journal rather than excessive amounts of info about the sponsor and host (if that makes sense). From the perspective of secondary sources, maybe there's more written about the relationship to the host rather than the actual journal itself. (And in my opinion, I think the fact that it's hosted by a university is what makes it interesting...) Looking forward, rather than removing some of the sponsor and host stuff, I think the best thing to do would be to expand the stuff on the journal. You have convinced me, and I withdraw my objection. I looked at other publications hosted by colleges and I see there is consistency. Best wishes. oldrider (talk) 17:30, 11 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
