Proposed Deletion

[edit]
  • Keep: This road is probably as notable in NC as Broadway is in New York. Numerous news stories have featured Franklin Street and it is well known all over the state for its celebrations, especially Halloween. Not to mention its importance to UNC-CH and if nothing else, that shooting story. Parts of this article are sourced, although it's not formatted in the best manner. It needs some touchup but this article is definately notable enough to exist. It should focus on more of the cultural impact instead of the street rather than just a list of businesses. Revamp: yes, delete: absolutely not. --TinMan 20:09, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As the article currently goes, there is no claim to notability and no sources showing notability. None of the external links are about the street. Even its importance probably doesn't qualify it as a seperate article under WP:LOCAL. If the "Numerous news stories" where Franklin Street is the subject are produced my mind would change but at the moment I'm still believe my initial thoughts of a non notable street are valid. I'll give it a while for reliable sources establishing notability to be found before taking it to AfD. Nuttah68 21:16, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've done a little beefing up/slimming down of the article, removing things that are unencylopediaic and adding cultural info. There could be a lot still done, especially on how the area music venues led to the sucess of bands such as Ben Folds Five, etc. I've been doing some research into Wikipedia:Deletion_policy/Roads and streets and WP:LOCAL. It seems to me that Franklin Street is seems to pass a lot of the suggested guidelines to keep an article. It's a road that's known by many UNC fans, which span the country, as well as throughout most the state (meeting the proposed 1000km standard). In fact, I could argue that of all the streets in the state, Franklin Street is the most well-known. It also has more than one points of interest, passing the proposed "checklist". From what I've picked up from the aforementioned debates, most of the streets under debate of deletion are ones that are significant routes of travel. Franklin Street, however, is not known as a arterial corridor, but rather as a center of culture and college student social life. In a sense, it's part of the University itself, and therefore should remain... just as articles on the Old Well and Dean Smith Center should remain. Plus, since the road's college-oriented businesses stretch into neighboring Carrboro, the article can't easily be merged into the Chapel Hill article. Again, it still could use some touchup paint, but I think it's beyond deletion. --TinMan 00:29, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ask almost anyone in North Carolina (or any NC sports fan across the country) whether this street is notable and you will get a resounding yes. I'm surprised it was nominated for deletion. It's a very worthy article and a very notable street.--Gloriamarie 00:53, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Celebrations

[edit]

Does anyone have any pictures of a post-Duke bball celebration. Maybe with a fire? I think that would be a great thing to add. I can see if I can come up with one as well. Kingtwist (talk) 23:03, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
