[edit]Can I suggest moving St Mary's, Redcliff to the top, as it is the most impressive image. And because vertical images don't sit weel among landscape images. Amandajm (talk) 12:39, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
Errors of Fact
[edit]According to Bristol City Council there are 100 Grade I buildings in Bristol, Bristol City Council Listed Buildings
Kingswood is not in Bristol, it is in South Gloucestershire so Whitefield's Tabernacle should be removed.
The Bristol Old Vic is not a listed building but the Theatre Royal, which is occupied by the Bristol Old Vic company is.
I shall address this over the next month. Jezhotwells (talk) 08:23, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
- I agree about the number of buildings. The PDF document that can be downloaded from the council's web page has 52 (?) entries, but that is the number of listings, not the number of buildings, and I assume that for the figure of 100 they are counting each address covered by listings such as "NUMBERS 7 TO 13 AND ATTACHED AREA RAILINGS, 7-13 PORTLAND SQUARE". Perhaps it would be clearer to say "X buildings covered by Y listings". I am sceptical about 100 being an exact count, as making an exact auditable count is not really in their brief. I would favour the inclusion of a qualifier such as "approximately", even though it's not in the source. That probably makes me a bad wikipedian.
- Whitefield's Tabernacle does seem to be an anomalous inclusion.
There is a note that "The entry for Bristol Old Vic includes the Theatre Royal and Coopers Hall", i.e. two Grade I buildings are covered by one article.Wrong. Bristol Old Vic is the relevant article, but the listing is for "The Theatre Royal" which includes Coopers Hall. Next time someone mentions the Old Vic I shall frown and say "Do you mean the Theatre Royal?" William Avery (talk) 10:44, 24 July 2009 (UTC)- It's a common mistake - The Bristol Old Vic is a theatre company which has occupied the building since 1946. Older residents of Bristol sometimes refer to the building as the "Old Gaff". The photographs show the Coopers' Hall which was made into the entrance circa 1970. The Theatre Royal lies behind this building and is not visible from the street. I have considered spitting off the Theatre Royal from the BOV article. Even the council have it wrong with their brown tourist signs which refer to the Bristol Old Vic with a Tudor rose, indicating a heritage site, rather than the drama masks indicating a theatre. Jezhotwells (talk) 23:24, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
- As the one who created & did most of the work on this list - a couple of bits of explanation related to the points made above -reject as you see fit.
- Number of listed buildings - I think the council is a bit confused on this - If you look at List of Grade I Listed Buildings in Bristol from the City Council you will see 51 entries - these are based on the English Heritage records, which are notoriously inconsistent and occasionally inaccurate, This problem of deciding what is "a building" is even worse on List of Grade I listed buildings in Bath and North East Somerset where the council says there are "663 Grade I listed buildings" but there are only approx 100 listings (sorry for the inaccuracy I'm still working on that one) This is because a whole street of listed buildings can be covered by one listing whereas others such as Widcombe Manor House has separate listings for the fountain, walls, balustrading, gates etc which are attached to it. The wording used on that list is "Bath and North East Somerset has 663 Grade I listed buildings, one of the highest concentrations in the country,: which are covered by approximately 100 English Heritage listings."
- Whitefield's Tabernacle, Kingswood is not in Bristol, but there was early discussion on the Bristol wikiproject about what to include in Bristol & following "Common usage" Kingswood was included as most people who live there describe it as Bristol rather than S. Glos - but I'd be happy for this one to be removed from this list as it is included in List of Grade I listed buildings in Gloucestershire
- Theatre Royal for Bristol Old Vic see EH listing
- Great to see the efforts to get this list right - I'm currently spending most of my WP time on the sub lists of List of Grade I listed buildings in Somerset & trying to get consistency between all the lists around the country is a real challenge.— Rod talk 12:15, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
100 GI listed buildings
[edit]I have problems with the recent change to 100 Grade I listed buildings - for which I've not seen any evidence. Perhaps the city council should be contacted for an updated list. — Rod talk 17:40, 24 July 2009 (UTC) A quick search of Images of England using advanced search Place Name=Bristol & Building Grade = I gives 52 results.— Rod talk 17:43, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
- The last report from English Heritage in 2006 that counts the listed buildings, Heritage Counts, says 62 Grade I listed buildings.[1]--Aldux (talk) 17:53, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
- I reckon I'll have to go to the planning department and see what they have, but they make that claim on their website[2] and I have put the cite in the article. Jezhotwells (talk) 23:03, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
- POsibly the count includes railing, sundials, etc. Jezhotwells (talk) 23:06, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
Converting OSGB36 (OS grid refs) to coords on this list and others
[edit]I have started a discussion about converting the OSGB36 (OS grid refs) on this list and others to use Template:Coord, as I think this offers advantages for users worldwide (who may be unfamiliar with the OS system) and the use of Template:GeoGroupTemplate to enable mapping on googlemaps etc. I have been told that a bot could be tasked to do this, however this would be quite a significant change and would not want to do it without consensus. If anyone has any comments could they join the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Geographical coordinates#Automagically converting OSGB36 to coord?.— Rod talk 16:25, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
