Regarding Houdini being asked to author the book, I have read in magic history books
(unfortunately I cannot rememeber which) that first Houdini was asked, but although he wanted
his name involved with the project he did not want to take part in the work himself. Later,
Tarbell was approached, he accepted, and Houdini was out of the picture. If someone knew where
to find references regarding this that'd be great.
