This page has been recently proposed for deletion (26 October 2024) by RCSCott91 (talk · contribs) with the comment: Article is a copy of Key West#History section. Adds nothing that isn't already said in that section or could be added to it. Considering that original draft editor just recently added an anchor to the Key West history section, they are also aware of the repetitiveness of information. Submission declined
[edit]This article was initially declined for unreliable sources. However, the sources I have used were published books with cited authors on the History of Key West that that contained thorough information on the subject. Other sources included the United States Congress, NOAA, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Department of the Navy, etc. Further information as to how the citations of this page are unreliable and warrant the rejection of this article into article namespace would be very helpful. Proposed deletion
[edit]The #History section in the Key West main article does not go into nearly the same degree of detail as this article. The amount of information in #History includes summaries including:
"John F. Kennedy was to use "90 miles from Cuba" extensively in his speeches against Fidel Castro. Kennedy himself visited Key West a month after the resolution of the Cuban Missile Crisis".
However, this article goes into much more detail then that in a numerous of topics. This includes discussing the specific fortification plans and strategic significance that were proposed in events such as the Key West Agreement. This is information that is not mentioned in Key West History at all.
Further examples include the fact that Key West's significance as the headquarters of the Union Navy's East Gulf Blockade Squadron during the American Civil War and Commodore David Porter's Misquito Fleet headquartered in Key West. Not only are these topics not touched upon in Key West's main page, but do not go into nearly the same degree of detail. "History of Key West" provides dates, notable figures, and detailed events that compliment Key West brief historical summery on its main page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bronson Fotiadis1 (talk • contribs) 11:23, 26 October 2024 (UTC)
Refocus the article.
[edit]@Bronson Fotiadis1 Your objection was note, you haven't addressed the repeating of information already covered in Key west#History or the fact that much of this information should simply be added to the section in Key west article. Why not refocus the article to Key west prior to Florida's transfer from Spain to Great Britain in 1763 since there is no coverage of that time period?
You can even request a move (rename of the page) to help allow this article to fit perfectly into the place of that anchor you placed in the key west article.

- The same could also be said in History of Miami, which includes numerous information repeated inn Miami#History, or even History of Tampa, Florida. The point of a "history main page" is to take and compliment the information summarized in the main articles #History and expand upon it in a single focused article. Most of the historical information in "History of Key West" expands on the brief summaries provided in Key West#History. Additionally, "History of Key West" expands on numerous other topics than just " prior to Florida's transfer from Spain to Great Britain in 1763" such as Key West's artistic significance throughout the 19th century, the specific fortification projects established in Fort Zachary Taylor before and during the American Civil War, and the timeline that occurred throughout the 19th century that contributed to Key West becoming the United State's wealthiest city. - @Bronson Fotiadis1 You mean one of the richest per capita. If you look at the talk:History of Miami, you'll see a lot of pretty harsh talk topics from 2006, although they do coincidence with a very poor quality article looking at the historical edits.
- That history of Miami example is definitely a very good example. This article already looks better than the 2006 version. Do you plan to expand into prior to British possession and further back into Native American History of Key West?
- Have you already looked at some of the pictures to possibly added? Any you find in commons are already cleared under the CCL so you won't have to worry about a copyright strike.

- Expanding on prior British possession and Native occupation of Key West is a great idea and is certainly something I will be working on. The difficulty arises when searching for reliable citations and references, however, I will encourage any participants who may have any insight on providing third-party and reliable sources for the content of these topics. Perhaps a future "Key West Portal" page would supplement the Category: History of Key West, for editors to implement this content. Bronson Fotiadis1 (talk) 01:03, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Bronson Fotiadis1If I find anything I will add. If down the road, you feel like this article gets to the point don't forget about nomination WP:GOOD. RCSCott91 (talk) 18:03, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- This article article actually has been nominated for WP: Good Article. As I am rather new at this, I am carious: is their any action on my part in order to get this article nominated or am I to simply wait for a reviewer to look at the submission? Bronson Fotiadis1 (talk) 20:47, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Bronson Fotiadis1You just got to get it to the citation and format level described and then they have a certain time where it doesn't have massive change or vandalism. If it meets those requirements, someone will place the template and try and invite others to review and come to consensus.
- Yes, a lot of editors take it as a badge of pride when they start an article and are able to bring it to that level officially, going as far as placing a remark in their user page for the acomplishment
- Get the article to a place that you feel is at what is described and ping me, I will as unbiased as I can go by the requirements and if it is good, I will place it for you. RCSCott91 (talk) 21:53, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
