ELVIS PRESLEY INTERVIEW
[edit]Hy Gardner was also the host of "Hy Gardner Calling", the most legendary of his interviews was with 21 year old Elvis Presley who had just recently risen to national fame. Gardner, naturally being from an older generation, seems very much the "square" in relation to Elvis' androgynistic/James Dean-esque persona. However, to be fair to Mr. Gardner, he was asking questions about certain slanderous rumors that had cropped up about Presley and was so able to clear the air. Essentially being a good journalist to get the truth to the public. The hilarity of these rumors, to modern ears, especially the one about Elvis allegedly shooting his mother is ridiculous then as it is now. Elvis himself even said "that one takes the cake", meaning it's the most ludicrous thing he's heard. The show itself was saved for posterity by means of the then common technique of kinescope. It was essentially a telephoned interview shown in split screen, with a visibly exhausted Elvis on the left of the screen, and Mr. Gardner performing the interview on the right. The image quality is terrible, even by mid 50's standards, but it is still quite interesting to watch.
