Godfrey's appearances

[edit]

It isn't true to say, as the current opening para does, that Goddie conducted 'virtually all' performances during his tenure. In the 1960s I regularly saw D'Oyly Carte performances conducted by his assistants, James Walker and Will Cowley, and I assume (I don't know from first hand experience) that their predecessors, Alan Ward and William Cox-Ife did their share of conducting. One always rather hoped Goddie would be in the pit, but there were always plenty of evenings (and a fortiori afternoons) when he wasn't. Tim riley 23:48, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

'most' is almost certainly correct. I don't know how one could prove it, but it seems a reasonable proposition. Tim riley 09:19, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment

[edit]

I have assessed this as a B-class article because it pretty much covers Godfrey's career. I don't think there are any biographies or other writings about him that would add that much more. -- Ssilvers 01:59, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That little bit's all there is about him in existence? I find that surprising, but you'd probabyl know better than me.--Wizardman 03:07, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Penguin Guide quote

[edit]

Do we need it, you ask, SSilvers. The date, being so recent, was what led me to include it - taking the critical assessments of IG from the 1920s to more or less today. But if you think it otiose by all means zap it. En passant I thought the knighthood quote was better at the top than the bottom of the section, but de gustibus Tim riley (talk) 17:47, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, a 2007 assessment is a good idea, but do they say anything more concrete than "inimitable"? All the best, -- Ssilvers (talk) 18:54, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
