Issue with story description
[edit]According to the New York Times [1] story 'Who is Kilroy', there wasn't an issue with the riveters erasing Kilroy's marking of the rivets. Instead, the problem was Kilroy's supervisors wanting Kilroy to reinspect work he already did. His superiors would not believe Mr. Kilroy that he had inspected a particular piece of work, so writing "Kilroy was here" let his superiors know (in a humorous way) that the work had been inspected.
