Hand picking Japanese beetles

[edit]

Japanese beetles have a tendency to drop off the leaves if you approach them. I have a small bucket of water that I hold under the leaves where they are eating. As I put my hand over the leaves, they have a tendency to drop off, right into the bucket. I have captured over 10,000 beetles in a single year this way, but if you do so repeatedly, twice daily, the numbers go down each succeeding year. They will swim in the water for almost 24 hours before dying, so, to make the process more humane, I initially added a few drops of soap, which kills them within minutes. Then I found out that my chickens loved them, so I stopped adding soap to the water and simply fed them to my chickens. Free food! I hate Japanese beetles!! An old joke about the traps - put them in your neighbor's yard. 2601:5CC:4503:1D0:D9B4:1445:37B:A316 (talk) 12:56, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Mating Behavior

[edit]

This entry would benefit from including a section about mating behavior as there seems to only be a focus on reproduction so far 2600:6C40:1F0:A0F0:8983:F43A:5FDE:6668 (talk) 22:02, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The entry on the Japanese beetle offers a comprehensive overview of this notorious insect, covering taxonomy, distribution, habitat, behavior, and control measures. Despite its thoroughness, there are notable gaps in behavioral information, particularly regarding social activity, mating behavior, and parental care. Addressing these areas would enhance our understanding of the beetle's reproductive strategies and population dynamics, contributing to more effective pest management strategies. Predators and Pathogens

[edit]

This entry should add categories on the enemies of this organism including this species’ predators and pathogens because this entry mentions both factors yet does not have them as their own separate categories. Gbuml (talk) 03:35, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Review on Japanese Beetles Wiki15Feb

[edit]

The Japanese beetle article gives a thorough description about the Japanese beetle, such as its taxonomy, global distribution, life cycle, control methods, and host plants. The entry also discusses research studies and findings on the effectiveness of traps, biological control methods, and use of microsporidian pathogens, which gives credibility on the information. The most interesting part of the article is learning about the behavioral mechanisms of the beetles. The beetles use pheromones to attract other beetles, and these chemical signals play a role in interactions between beetles and shaping population dynamics within its ecosystem.

The missing categories in the article are feeding behavior, reproductive behavior, and social behavior. Mentioning Japanese beetle’s feeding behavior is important because it discusses about their ecological influence. Adding feeding behavior on host plants to the article would help readers understand the beetle’s ecological role in plant communities and influence population dynamics. Mentioning reproductive behavior, such as mating methods and selection and factors regarding reproductive success, is needed to learn about the evolutionary adaptations of these beetles and their ecological impact in breeding habitats. Mentioning social behavior, such as feeding and mating, gives awareness on ecological dynamics of Japanese beetle populations.

This article hits and misses the mark for some of the criteria for a Good Wiki Article. For the Illustrated section, there are images of Japanese beetles, its life cycle, eggs, pupa, map of its location, etc. These media are corrected tagged, relevant to the topic, and have acceptable captions. However, for the Broad in its Coverage section, the article does not discuss behavioral categories of feeding, reproductive, and social behavior, which makes the article lack information on the main behavioral concepts.

In the talk page, a person shares a practical way for managing Japanese beetles by hand-picking them off leaves and collecting them in a bucket of water. This method allows the person to catch 10,000 beetles in one year. The user also mentions that the beetles were fed to the chickens. The comment gives important insights into alternative ways for pest control and describes the ecological benefits of using natural predators such as chickens, not chemical pesticides.

The article is rated as High-importance on the project’s importance scale because the subject is extremely notable, but may not have achieved international recognition or only notable in a certain continent. This rating makes sense because the Japanese beetle is an important pest specifies in North America and has economic and ecological influence on agriculture and ecosystems. The article is also rated as C-class on Wikipedia’s content assessment scale. This rating makes sense because the article does not adequately cover certain behavioral aspects of the beetle such its mating behavior and communication signals. If these aspects are not fully addressed, the article would be considered incomplete for its content on the beetle’s behavior. JKatieWiki8Feb (talk) 04:30, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I've recently made some revisions to the Wikipedia page on Japanese beetles to enhance its comprehensiveness and accuracy. Drawing from a variety of reputable scientific sources, I've expanded the content to cover additional aspects of Japanese beetle biology, behavior, and ecological interactions. These additions aim to provide readers with a more thorough understanding of the topic while ensuring that the information presented is well-supported and scientifically grounded. In addition, I've included a list of credible sources for additional reading and verification of the facts offered in the essay. I've also included some pictures to make reading about this insect more fascinating. I have included in-depth explanations on various areas. Just noting for a second time now that the edits were removed twice due to WP:NOTESSAY issues, especially for things like Japanese beetles belong to the Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Arthropoda, Class Insecta, Order Coleoptera, and Family Scarabaeidae. After the comments in sections below, this student should not have bee mass reinserting the content. I can try to see what may be useful at a later time to include, but for now the edits are removed to maintain the stable version of the article. KoA (talk) 18:49, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I thought the article was written well. It was very thorough and detailed in its information. I added some additional links to technical terms and geographical regions for convenience and consistency. I also made subsequent references to species names more consistent. I also added several subsection headings and changed the style of old subsection headings for better organization and breaking up of the information. I would suggest reordering the sections to better conform to topic order guidelines for beetles, but I did not want to go ahead and do it as this would heavily change the informational progression of the article, meaning that the writing would need to be changed too. Revisions

[edit]

This article needs significant revisions. This does not meet the criteria for a wikipedia article and reads more like a persuasive essay as to why this beetle species is interesting. There are so many run-on and wordy sentences that much of the writing is difficult to follow. Much of the information is incredibly redundant and repeated in different sections just with different phrasing. There are many times when "research" vaguely is mentioned without any examples, supporting evidence, or citations. This article is also very opinionated, with many phrases about why this beetle is important to learn about. 2600:6C40:1F0:A0F0:2978:3A3A:709E:7C6 (talk) 02:13, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Peer review

[edit]

This article is quite short and does not contain much information on the Japanese beetle outside of geographic distribution and methods of pest control. The lack of content on the page is likely due to another editor removing more than half of the document due to issues discussed previously on the talk page. The student involved in previously adding to the article should reuse the same academic sources but present the information in a neutral tone. I’m sure that the sources have valuable information that is appropriate for Wikipedia. I went ahead and added a source for the naming of the beetle and fixed some grammatical errors I found.
