"Experiencing xenophobia there as well"
[edit]A feeling someone has does not make it true, are there any credible reliable sources for such a claim?

- What are you trying to say? If someone feels as if they have experienced xenophobia, then have felt as if they have experienced it. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 23:08, 30 October 2020 (UTC)
Please stop removing Bengali from name
[edit]Please stop removing Bengali from his name. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 37.111.197.122 (talk) 11:44, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
- Why? Your request would be more persuasive if you explained what relevance his name in Bengali has to an encyclopedic biography of him in English.
- If a person's name was not originally written in a Latin alphabet (if, for example, it was originally written in Bengali), then Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English) states that the native spelling generally should be included in parentheses, in the first sentence of the article. However, there is no evidence that Jawed Karim's name was originally written in Bengali.
- Although his father emigrated from Bangladesh, Jawed Karim was not born in Bangladesh (or Bengal). There is no indication that he is a citizen of Bangladesh,
has ever visited Bangladesh, speaks Bengali, or even can write his name in Bengali. For some subjects, the bulk of sources may be written in Bengali, or such sources may present a unique viewpoint, and thus the Bengali name arguably can be useful. But that is not true in this case. He was born in East Germany, moved to West Germany, and moved again to the United States, where he became notable much later. Ample sources exist in English and German, and they cover all significant views of his life.
- Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biography instructs us to state key information in the first sentence, and not clutter it with details that can make it difficult to read (such as foreign languages). Why should Wikipedia include his name in Bengali? --Worldbruce (talk) 15:48, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
- Reasons to include:
- Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English) says to do so. "The native spelling of a name should generally be included in parentheses..." Regardless of place of birth or original name on documents, the name is natively not English and best written in Bangla.
- The person has a reputation for being Bangladeshi. Sources on this person are rather sparse and we lack information about the subjects' own wishes. However, sources do frequently mention Bangladeshi ancestry.
- Social context of Bangladeshi culture includes presenting Bangla text. Bangladesh fought a war of independence where the right to use their own language was a key issue, and the name "Bangladesh" means "country for Bangla language". Bangladesh founded a UNESCO international holiday, International Mother Language Day, calling for respect for native languages. It is reasonable and appropriate for Wikipedia editors to presume that if someone has a public image of Bangladeshi ancestry, then by default to respect that culture we should include the Bangla text of their name in places where that text is appropriate. Since Wikipedia already has a custom of including non-Latin text when there is a reason to do so, that justification applies here.
- Non-reliable sources use the Bangla name. We do not cite these sources in Wikipedia, but there are plenty of social media and other Bangladeshi publications which use this person's Bangla name. He has the popular image of a Bangladeshi public figure in technology. It is not far-fetched or surprising to use Bangla text for this person. This is not a reason to use the Bangla name here, but it is evidence that doing is would not be inappropriate.

- Reasons to include:
- Include Bangla name, per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English) and per Bluerasberry. BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 11:19, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

Goodusername007 (talk) 08:06, 24 June 2021 (UTC) Jawed Karim (Bengali: জাওয়েদ করিম; born October 28, 1979) is an American software engineer and Internet entrepreneur of Bangladeshi and German Descent. He is a co-founder of YouTube and the first person to upload a video to the site. This inaugural video, titled Me at the zoo and uploaded on April 24, 2005, has been viewed 168 million times, as of June 1, 2021.[2][3] During Karim's time working at PayPal, where he met the fellow YouTube co-founders Steven Chen and Chad Hurley, he had designed many of the core components including its real-time anti-Internet-fraud system.

Muslim? No confirmation of this
[edit]Why do people keep adding that this individual is muslim? There is no official statement from the individual himself supporting this as a fact. Until that time, it should not be added to the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mafiaa2012 (talk • contribs) 04:24, 20 March 2022 (UTC)

Hello. In the little caption under the "Me at the Zoo" video, the word should be on, instead of in. I'm just a noob, so I can't make the fix. I hope I'm doing the right thing here. Thanks. Bholtgren (talk) 04:07, 26 April 2023 (UTC) Bholtgren (talk) 04:07, 26 April 2023 (UTC)

after reading the article (Top) I found a misleading information which it's the date when (karim)'s video was uploaded so please change "uploaded on April 23, 2005," to "uploaded on April 24, 2005," Yassinechaouachi (talk) 11:15, 9 June 2023 (UTC)

what is the purpose of the "response to youtube" section? I understand that some parts might be relevant as a founder of youtube, but most of the section seems irrelevant to karim's wikipedia article Forensicswaifu (talk) 08:22, 27 August 2023 (UTC)

- forgive my previous lack of etiquette, i'm relatively new to wikipedia, but I'm unsure as to why the "response to youtube" section is relevant and believe it should be removed. The section just doesn't seem important enough to include in Karim's article. Though he is one of the founders, he hasn't been involved in youtube's operations for a long time, and as such a section dedicated to his responses to the company's business decisions just doesn't seem necessary. “In addition to English, Jawed speaks German and Bengali.” He likely doesn’t speak Bengali
[edit]The source cited for this piece of information only indicates he was fluent at one point in his childhood. If you look at this web archive link to his site, you can click on his resume, in which he only mentions that he speaks German and English, no mention of Bengali. New thumbnail put in on "Me at the zoo"
[edit]The thumbnail of the video has changed as of December 15th 2023, would be good to document in the article under the "Responses to YouTube" section. Possibly satire of generic modern YouTube thumbnails? High resolution image given here: [2]https://img.youtube.com/vi/jNQXAC9IVRw/maxresdefault.jpg Stebaint (talk) 19:19, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
New Description
[edit]Jawed had changed the description to
“Noob vs Pro vs Hacker at the zoo AKA I Spent/Survived 1 Day Trapped At The Zoo AKA $1 Al Elephant vs $1,000,000 Al Elephant AKA Last To Leave Zoo Wins! AKA Never Do This At The Zoo (WHAT HAPPENS NEXT WILL SHOCK YOU)”
But since then it has changed back to the normal one making me look unsourceless. Crossberryy (talk) 15:50, 18 December 2023 (UTC)

Current occupation?
[edit]It's probably not necessary to be specific about his employer(s) (if any) as clearly they aren't terribly notable (else there would probably already be more about them in the article), but it would be nice for the reader to get a sense of his current activities, other than occasionally editing his video description to attack certain moves by YouTube/Google. Does he work in any particular industry, for example? Is he retired, or living off investments? One line (e.g., "As of 2024, he is employed in sausage research and development.") would be sufficient. If nothing else, it would help make the article look more current and "complete". 100.40.29.79 (talk) 12:53, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
"of Bangladeshi-German origin" in lede
[edit]According to WP:ETHNICITY, ethnicity, religion, or sexuality should generally not be in the lead unless relevant to the subject's notability. I don't think Karim is notable for being of Bangladeshi-German origin, I think he is notable for being one of the co-founders of YouTube. I have removed the phrase accordingly. But if a good reason to reinclude said phrase is present, please make it here. Zinderboff(talk) 13:21, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
Religion, again
[edit]I've lived and worked around a lot of people of South Asian descent, and I know how they will associate people with a religion by their first or last names, but nothing in the article says anything about a religion at all. This was the edit that introduced his religion category and a rather flat argument for it [3]. It is a stretch to say that because one of his parents was Bengali, he practices Islam. He is equally descended from East Germans, among the most irreligious people on Earth, but we similarly don't give him atheist categories because he hasn't said anything on the matter.
I propose per WP:BLPCAT that anyone who adds any personal belief category to this page without good evidence (i.e. interviews with the man himself) should be given sanctions for adding unsourced information to BLPs. WP:BLPDS. Unknown Temptation (talk) 17:44, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
