Name
[edit]These reports that suggest that "Leo Núñez" is actually "Juan Carlos Oviedo" are thus far unconfirmed. We would need to wait for official confirmation at the least, or perhaps his going by Oviedo, before changing all mentions of his name, moving the page, etc. – Muboshgu (talk) 16:40, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
- Would this AP report qualify as confirmation? It asserts plainly that Nunez/Oviedo did in fact admit to "using a fake ID to sign a professional contract;" however, it does not confirm what his actual name is. weriov (talk) 01:16, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
- Found an article on MLB.com, which states that he's in the process of reverting back to his original name. So, as for now, his name on this article should still (technically) remain as Leo Nunez. Bloom6132 (talk) 15:39, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
Requested move

No consensus to move. Vegaswikian (talk) 18:20, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
Leo Núñez → Juan Oviedo – MLB.com now recognizes him by his real name in place of his false name. – Muboshgu (talk) 03:52, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
Support they now recognize him as Juan Oviedo no debate needed.--Jack Cox (talk) 08:37, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
Comment Can someone present sources that specifically say he no longer goes by Leo Nunez?—Bagumba (talk) 01:28, 13 November 2011 (UTC)
- Well, there's this, which calls him Oviedo. – Muboshgu (talk) 01:53, 13 November 2011 (UTC)
Oppose I haven't found reliable sources that he officially changed his name (which probably won't be resolved until his immigration status is straightened out). Lacking that, I see more sources saying he is "a.k.a. Leo Nunez" as opposed to either "formerly known as ..." or simply as Oviedo. If he never plays in MLB again, his WP:COMMONNAME could easily remain as Nunez.—Bagumba (talk)

Nunez still being used
[edit]Dec 9 AP: http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/7336000/miami-marlins-leo-nunez-apologizes-using-fake-name-age —Bagumba (talk) 23:58, 15 December 2011 (UTC)
Birthdates
[edit]If we are going to list them, they should be consistent in infobox and in lead. Are there reliable sources on the exact new date? If not, {{Birth based on age as of date}} might be better to use in infobox.—Bagumba (talk) 02:26, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- I didn't know that template existed. That seems a better way to go about it than my solution. That way, we can keep the birth dates originally reported by "Nunez" (and "Carmona") in prose in the appropriate section. – Muboshgu (talk) 02:28, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- Well, MLB.com and a lot of other site list Mar 15, 1982, while some still list August 14, 1983. Will list put MLB's in the article, and the alternative date in footnote.06:33, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
Requested move II
[edit]- The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: page moved. This was the basic consensus. There was no consensus on using the middle name or even J.C. so those issues should be discussed on this talk page and when there is consensus, move the article or bring it back to RM. Vegaswikian (talk) 20:33, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
– I am trying this again, first of all MLB recognizes him as Juan Oviedo, http://mlb.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=434663. Yahoo sports recognizes him as Juan Oviedo, http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7541. CBS while not having formally changed his name on his player page refers to him as Juan Oviedo in this article, http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/players/playerpage/533057/leo-nunez. ESPN has also not formally changed his name on his player page has now started referring to him as Juan Oviedo. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/7471722/juan-carlos-oviedo-aka-leo-nunez-agrees-deal-miami-marlins?eleven=twelve I think it is about time we quit this nonsense and recognize the name change because that is likely what it is going to be on his jersey.relisted--Mike Cline (talk) 14:41, 30 January 2012 (UTC) Jack Cox (talk) 22:13, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
Move to Juan Carlos Oviedo, not Juan OviedoMost references to Leo Nunez now are just to mention his former name while using Oviedo as primary name. However it seems Juan Carlos Oviedo (280 ghits) is more common than Juan Oviedo (55). Per WP:COMMONNAME, move to Juan Carlos Oviedo.—Bagumba (talk) 22:44, 20 January 2012 (UTC)- I disagree with the WP:GHITS reasoning. It's not common to use a players's middle name. Sources were at first calling him "Juan Carlos Oviedo", but more recently sources seem to be dropping the middle name. – Muboshgu (talk) 17:16, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
- Not common, but it depends on the individual. See Juan Antonio Samaranch or Billy Joe Tolliver.—Bagumba (talk) 20:19, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
- Even when limiting search to the past week, Juan Carlos Oviedo has 326 hits vs Juan Oviedo with 77—Bagumba (talk) 07:38, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
- True that some people use their middle names. The thing is, we don't know that Oviedo wants to. I'm gonna have to change my vote to abstain at this point. – Muboshgu (talk) 16:52, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
- Move to Juan Carlos Oviedo. Alternatively move to Juan Oviedo as a better alternative to Leo Nunez Modified from my earlier recommendation. Prefer Juan Carlos Oviedo, but any form of Oviedo is better than Nunez at this point.—Bagumba (talk) 20:15, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
- I disagree with the WP:GHITS reasoning. It's not common to use a players's middle name. Sources were at first calling him "Juan Carlos Oviedo", but more recently sources seem to be dropping the middle name. – Muboshgu (talk) 17:16, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
- It may be worth waiting until we find out which name will be on his jersey. If he continues to play under the alias, does Leo Nunez become a his "stage name"? Similar discussion on the Fausto Carmona talk page. Some addition to the BLP may be needed to cover eventualities such as this. I would not oppose the move at this point though. Wyvern t (talk) 04:48, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
- Comment -- I thought this was going to be a version of a "Stage name", but it seems it is a case of personation - presumably entry to USA under false papers. Whatever the outcome, keep all relevant redirects. Peterkingiron (talk) 16:12, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
Support move to Juan Oviedo per player's admission and trend in sources to use his real name.Changing to abstain until "Juan Oviedo" vs. "Juan Carlos Oviedo" can be resolved.Again supporting a move to Juan Oviedo, no Carlos. – Muboshgu (talk) 17:16, 21 January 2012 (UTC)- Wait until the middle name issue is settled, so we can see which use is more common. CanuckMy page89 (talk), 01:11, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
- (If page was moved though, I would support to Juan Oveido, no middle name) CanuckMy page89 (talk), 06:28, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
- Comment It seems that either of the "Oviedo" options is better than "Leo Nunez" at this point. I would suggest participants make the best choice based on current usage in sources. Middle names can be added/removed later as needed. Otherwise, are we waiting for a direct quote from Oviedo about whether he prefers "Juan" or "Juan Carlos"?—Bagumba (talk) 08:53, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
- You're right, I'll support a move again. – Muboshgu (talk) 19:52, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
- And if this wasnt confusing enough, Miami's GM in December said "He's now known as J.C. Oviedo".—Bagumba (talk) 20:21, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
- I should add that J.C. only has 1 hit on Google the past week and is not common.—Bagumba (talk) 20:28, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
- Oy givalt. Well, it's not common now, but that might actually be the most definitive thing we've heard on what his common name will be going forward. I just created redirects at "J. C. Oviedo" and "J.C. Oviedo" to here. – Muboshgu (talk) 20:29, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
- I should add that J.C. only has 1 hit on Google the past week and is not common.—Bagumba (talk) 20:28, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
- Comment Latest trends the past week: 81 hits for "Juan Carlos Oviedo" and 3 hits for "Juan Oviedo".—Bagumba (talk) 09:46, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
- Comment He is recognized as Juan Oviedo now. J.C. is not common for him like it is for J.C. Romero. The sources at first were specifying his full name due to his identity issues. 71.251.47.98 (talk) 08:26, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

The result of the proposal was move per request.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:14, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
Juan Oviedo → Juan Carlos Oviedo – ESPN and other sources are using his full name. Marcus Qwertyus (talk) 21:29, 23 September 2012 (UTC)
- Could you please link to some of the other sources. That would help show that the ESPN link is not an Outlier.--70.49.73.84 (talk) 18:25, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
- Support In the past month, there are 178 Google news hits for "Juan Carlos Oviedo" and only 8 for "Juan Oviedo". In the earlier move discussion in January 2012, it was suggested to wait some more to see if "Juan Carlos" was in fact the common name. Months later, it remains the common name.—Bagumba (talk) 20:35, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
- Support per Bagumba. It is clearly the name he is referred to in the press, and though I'd like to see confirmation that it's his name of choice in addition, we have enough data to make this move without that. – Muboshgu (talk) 20:51, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
