Temporary Removals from article for restructuring purposes
[edit]- Unlike, legal education is the education of individuals who intend to become legal professionals or those who simply intend to use their law degree to some end.
- Legal awareness promotes legal literacy among entire masses or targeted mass audience.[citation needed][original research?]
- ===legal literacy and legal awareness===
- Legal awareness and legal literacy are almost synonymous terms.[citation needed][original research?] Legal awareness indicates over all casual exposure about a subject, where as literacy calls in more detail exposure with the subject.[citation needed][original research?]
- Obstacles section
- language barriers, economic barriers, social taboos[1], lack of political will, travelling communities, lack of will among legal fraternity[citation needed][original research?][needs copy edit]

Merger_proposal
[edit]It has been proposed that article Public legal education be merged (and redirected) in this article legal awareness.
Rational:
- Public legal education has the similler but lesser scope and the term is used in limited geographic area when compared with legal awareness.
- legal awareness is broader term used across the globe.
Please discuss

Adding info to Legal_awareness#Related_concepts
[edit]Need info and refs on concepts of Legal Consiousness, legal socialisation and legal mobilisation and vis a vis role of legal awareness in realisation of these concepts.
Notes on Legal Consiousness:
- Consciousness is not an individual trait nor solely ideational ;legal consciousness is a type of social practice reflecting and forming social structures. The study of legal Consiousness documents the
forms of participation and interpretion through which act or sustain, reproduce, or amend the circulating contested or hegemonic structures of meanings concerning law. Legal consiousness is the way in which law is experienced and interpreted by specific indivisuals as the engage, avoid or resist the law and legal meanings. Refs: [4]
- Affective legal analysis By Frank Fleerackers, Josef Heinz Müller, Wilfried Burkhardt (at google books) deals with theorotical concept of legal Consciousness as legal awareness and evaluates role of civic education vis a vis Legal_positivism
- Legal socialization :
Legal socialization is the process through which individuals acquire attitudes and beliefs about the law, legal authorities, and legal institutions. This occurs through individuals' interactions, both personal and vicarious, with police, courts, and other legal actors. To date, most of what is known about legal socialization comes from studies of individual differences among adults in their perceived legitimacy of law and legal institutions1, and in their cynicism about the law and its underlying norms.2 adults' attitudes about the legitimacy of law are directly tied to individuals' compliance with the law and cooperation with legal authorities Refs:[5]

methods used to promote legal awareness
[edit]- Events
- Legal awareness through Camps lectures and interactive workshops or Short duration crash program on the essential and elementary laws to para-legal activists and various stake holder,
among general public many wish to spend few hours in the after noon listening to scholars on contemporary issues that have significant bearing on the rights and livelihood of ordinary people.[1] Other methods are Road shows,Radio talks, Reality shows, Street -theatre- plays, Campaigns, Publication of relevant books, booklets and periodicals, posters and charts dealing with particular laws, distribution of pamphlets, brochures, folder, stickers, display of paintings and hoardings, folk schools and folk art, etc.[2] ;comics [3] [1] and ensuring publicity for various legal mobilisation activities. Display boards at strategic places of public activity like railway stations, bus stations, market places etc. and in front of major government offices and police stations helps government officials, police and the public to understand the spirit of law and the mind of the judiciary regarding such offences.[1]

Applied legal education
[edit]- Following had been posted at Talk:Legal education#Applied legal education for wider consideration and made request for comment to two users User_talk:Bearian and User talk:Rinnenadtrosc.
- After placing following information as imformal rfc at Talk:Legal education and no comments from any one. While following references are available and that it proves it applied legal education is a fact and not original research so I am tempted to remove citation needed and original research tags from the related statement in this article.
At Legal awareness article section Civics_and_socio-legal_literacy my following sentence is challanged for [citation needed] and [original research?]
- Applied legal education is imparted through business and commerce school and some other branches.
While I am sure my statement can not be incorrect, there seems to be difference in perception coming from people not aware of legal education in some part of the world. Secondly may be applied legal education is not high profile enough and less reffered or reffered differently.
It may have been challanged because internet does not throw direct search results, or Applied legal education wording may have different connotation for some people, Applied legal education may not be available in United States. In europe probably it has a different term some thing like vocational training (Not sure). Or Law schools are not using word applied legal education
What do I mean by applied legal education is short duration certificate cources where full law digree is not required and are are for limited purpose like:
- There is one Symbiosis Law School They have 15 Diploma cources and 9 Certification cources on various specific law subject like Diploma or certificate cource in 1) Arbitration ,2) Banking law 3) Human Resource 4) labour laws 5) Human rights and legal literacy etc. 6) Criminology and penalogy 7) Cyber law etc. [1] Most of Indian law colleges would have Certificate courses in Taxation law, in labour law , etc.
- [www.indiaeduinfo.com/distance education/law.htm here at this link] one will find a very big list of various applied law cources offered by distance education by various Indian education institutions for an example Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) Indias National level premier distance education institution offers [2]
- Awareness Course in Intellectual Propert Rights
- Certificate in (1) Consumer Protection, (2) Co-operation, Co-operative and Business, (3) Human Rights and (4) International Humanitarian
- PG Certificate in Cyber
- PG Diploma in (1) Environmental and (2) Intellectual Property Rights
During my internet search I could locate atleast one Australian/Newzeland college called "The College of Law" that explicitly offeres Postgraduate Applied Law Programs and they offer LLM (Applied Law) in areas like **Commercial Litigation
- Commercial Transactions
- Family Law
- In-house Practice
- Property Law
- Wills & Estates
- and Graduate Diploma of Family Dispute Resolution Practice (FDRP) [3]
Harward and Columbia 's Business and Law schools seems to offer some specialised cources that cover Business law please see http://web.law.columbia.edu/jd-mba/career-services and http://www.hbs.edu/mba/academic-experience/joint-degree-programs/Pages/harvard-law-school.aspx links . I do not have a proper understanding of US legal education structure.
Besides I am not aware if such short duration applied law cources are available in Canada, South Americas, Africa, Europe and rest of Asia (other than India) If those are offered what do they call such cources in their countries.
Although most Law schools may not have been using exact word applied leagal education, but is it not applied legal education ? or may be wikipedia experts can suggest be a better name.
My main purpose to bring this discussion is not convassing but I thought if more info comes in, this article is more apropriate to have a separate section about applied law. Ofcource wikipedia experts may agree upon a different name than that of "Applied legal education"
The users who tagged original research to my sentence I request them to revisit the tag if it can be removed with this explanation. And also do suggest which citations are ok enough to cite.
Thanks and Warm Regards

Tag removal as per Wikipedia:Tagging_pages_for_problems#Removing_tags
[edit]I am removing following redundant tags myself in good faith (as per Wikipedia:Tagging_pages_for_problems#Removing_tags ) , since concerned sentences were either removed or improved. This article has been updated several times and is one of the well sourced article by now. I made the request to other people for reassessment of the tags but may be people are busy. Only one comment we have received is about change of article name but certainly has no relation to the tags in the article.
{{Multiple issues|confusing|date=February 2013|reason=Laudable effort has been put into this article, but it seems rambling and incoherent.}}{{essay-like|date=February 2013}}
If any one wants to reassess the article is welcome, I have created a separate feed back section on this talk page and your comments are welcome. After reassessment and discussion on talk page still any one feels necessary then I will not mind tagging and will try to improve the article further.

suggession for change of article name to Legal literacy
[edit]- The first thing I would do here is move this from "legal awareness", which sounds somewhat ambiguous to me, to Legal literacy. This would parallel the comparable concept of Scientific literacy. bd2412 T 13:41, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for your frank expression. While I do have a different openion, which I have tried to elaborate below, but certainlly I am not hard and fast on that. I feel openions are likelly to change mostly according to individuals background like whether one is from legal fraternity, NGO, or Science background or other and we will wait for more openions to come on article name issue and decide in course of time.
Mainly what we need to be sure is readers will not get confused legal literacy with formal legal education (originally term legal literacy was used for formal legal education as par page no. 21 "Legal Literacy: An Introduction to Legal Studies" -- By Archie Zariski) , and so I would like to hear about this from legal fraternity from different parts of the world. Some how legal fraternity is slow to comment so we may need to wait little and please bear with me for that.
If we refer to this comparative Google trends, over the years, usage of search term "awareness" is going up slowly, while usage of search term "literacy" is going down slowly vis a vis search term "awareness" . Searches from countries like India US are more for search term "awareness" while people from UK and Australia may be still searching a little for term literacy.
Certainlly word literacy is more focussed and specific and in sciences expectation to be more specific about scientific terms is very much understandable. Literacy ensures a communication has been understood atleast to a minimum level; so word literacy is supposed to go on more educative side. Word awareness is more broader, liberal and has wider application and usage.
Some NGO employee or a politician in their speech may mention that such and such law is available to you. And mere mention of that is included in term of awareness.
Component of Camps and workshops for legal awareness constitutes more of Legal literacy or PLE. But other methods of legal awareness such as Street plays, Campaigns, distribution of pamphlets, display of paintings and hoardings may have intention to educate but it would not necessarilly confirm that a legal term has been understood since Campaign's intention may simply be confidance building or legal mobilisation or legal cautiousness and not necessarilly level of literacy. Now this is my personal openion. and I do not want to thrust upon others.
As said earlier we will take decesion with open mind on above subject, meanwhile I will apreciate further feed back on article content side.

Requesting help for more appropriate description for the image
[edit]This help request has been answered. If you need more help, you can , contact the responding user(s) directly on their user talk page, or consider visiting the Teahouse. |
Hi,
At the outset let me note that, Personally I do not have any interest, reason and intention to promote any particular organisation and I am not related to any of the persons or organisations mentioned / refered through out the article in any way.
In this article about Legal awareness I have included an image of Tanzanian women taking part in a programme related to legal awareness training and advocacy through skits, song, and dance, as well as legal aid counselling, and advice on will-writing and inheritance procedures. The image is included as a specific example about the specific activity or method adopted for legal awareness and is relevant to article section "Methods adopted to promote legal awareness".
The image included in this article before this edit change by User:George8211 was carrying a detail description about the said image. User:George8211 in good faith has removed detail descriptions of the image citing "remove promo words" and only left the info that "Women in Tanzania dance".
While I apreciate and thank for copy edit support by User:George8211, I suppose curtailed image description "Women in Tanzania dance" does not give enough idea why women in the image are dancing and why that image is relevant to the article and the section. If USAID-and ENVIROCARE names are not mention in image description is ok for me but I suppose and wish we have more descriptive info about the image. I need help from some senior en-wikipedian who is experinced in relevant rules and styles to revisit and rewrite the said image description .
Thanks and Regards
Mahitgar (talk) 14:19, 9 February 2015 (UTC)
- I would have to agree that the prior wording was unduly promotional of the organization named. The photo does not show any legal work taking place, it simply shows women dancing. The other similar photo on the page with the caption Women read about their legal rights in a public awareness campaign at least show women reading. Of course we cannot be sure if they are reading about legal rights, or the libretto to Pirates of Penzance, but at least they are reading. If the photo in question showed aid workers delivering a service, then the prior wording might have been acceptable with some more moderate editing. I'm leaving the {{help me}} template on the page to get some other opinions before closing the request. — Bill W. (Talk) (Contrib) (User:Wtwilson3) — 15:07, 9 February 2015 (UTC)
Both images we are discussing are taken from commons. About first image file name itself contains the clear description. File name is File:Womens read about their legal rights in a public awareness campaing (Benin) (5579786047).jpg . So it is not about women reading any thing but are clearly participating in a legal awareness campaing and accordinglly the description is given. About second image in question description is not coming out of my own imagination but on its common's page it gives a clear image description The USAID-supported ENVIROCARE provides village-level human rights training and advocacy through skits, song, and dance, as well as legal aid counseling, and advice on will-writing and inheritance procedures Now you do not find words legal awareness in descrption but to best of my belief this means all the way a legal awareness related skit where in women are dancing.
I am not insisting on USAID and ENVIROCARE names to be included , but image needs to have a proper description. As such mere mention of any organisation need not be considered as promotion ,Relevance of the names is supposed depend on it's encyclopedic or reference value the way I think. Since I am just updating legal theory related article on en wikipedia and I am not any way related any legal awaress related person or organisation remotely I suppose there is no conflict of interest while mentioning orgnisation names. I included orgnisation names due to its reference value
Mahitgar (talk) 15:36, 9 February 2015 (UTC)
- The image description in Commons is clearly meant to be promotional. Please note that the image author is USAID Africa Bureau. And the fact remains that the image does not show any legal awareness related activity. I think the best thing to do is remove the image entirely. I think you would need a reliable source to say that legal awareness was being learned/taught through dance. — Bill W. (Talk) (Contrib) (User:Wtwilson3) — 16:51, 9 February 2015 (UTC)
- I agree with Bill W. and will remove the image. I see no possible benefit to our readers; it certainly does not improve their understanding of legal awareness. Huon (talk) 19:11, 9 February 2015 (UTC)
