First female pilot of "the Orient"?

[edit]

The source claims that she was "Первая женщина-летчица на Востоке" (or more accurately, that her photo was printed with that caption), but I'm not sure under what definition of "east" this is true --- she was certainly preceded by Korean female pilots in the 1920s like Park Kyung-won and Kwon Ki-ok, and I believe by Japanese female pilots before that. Anyway, "the Orient" is kind of an archaic term and should probably be avoided; I removed the assertion for now. cab 00:56, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I guess the source is misleading. Well, she was definitely the first one in all of Southern Europe and the Middle East. Maybe this is what we should put? We need to try and decide on this as soon as possible, because the article is about to be considered for DYK. Parishan 05:14, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think Orient should be replaced with "Muslim world" or "Muslim countries". Grandmaster 06:28, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree, as Azerbaijan is not a Muslim country par excellence and definitely wasn't one back in the Stalinist Soviet era. On top of that, Mammadbeyova was also the first female pilot to the Caucasus and the adjacent regions that I mentioned above, which do not follow the definition of the Muslim world. Parishan 08:18, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Then what do you suggest? "First Azerbaijani female aviator" is something everyone agrees with. Grandmaster 11:05, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
How about replacing what Cab has marked out with another fact, for instance "...and the second parachutist woman in the former Soviet Union"? --Brand спойт 13:23, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Then her being the first aviator in the region isn't being given a credit. My suggestion is what I stated above: "She was also the first female pilot in Southern Europe and the Middle East." Parishan 20:04, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
May also work, but I mean "...the first Azerbaijani female aviator and the second parachutist woman in the former Soviet Union". Not so wordy for DYK by the way. --Brand спойт 22:00, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okay then, let's use your wording for DYK, and mine (if nobody has any objections, of course) in the article itself. Parishan 02:03, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mind. Grandmaster 08:03, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Azerbaijani nationalist websites hosted in Russia are not reliable for claims such as "first female pilot". If she is indeed the first, then you will have no problem finding neutral reliable source confirming your claim. VartanM (talk) 05:47, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not a problem. But tell me, why is that other website "nationalist"? Or is it that for you, nationalist is anything that is Azerbaijani? Parishan (talk) 03:44, 24 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Parishan can you be so kind and provide a quote from The Living Age.... VartanM (talk) 01:07, 27 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
